Chancellor Anne Mahon.

Mamhtákosiwin, gigii-minojigem, yawashte, kischi-iteyhta-mashchohin, nezu annellassi, félicitations!

As Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, it is my great pleasure to congratulate the remarkable Class of 2025. You now join our alumni community– a community who shares the best of the University of Manitoba spirit wherever they go.

You are graduating! As you reflect on what it took you to get to this moment, consider the connections you made—all the friends, mentors, advisors and family that guided and supported you.

You have reached deep within yourselves to get to this day. You have also likely reached out to others, both to lend support and to receive it. Take some time to thank those special people who have supported you. Gratitude and connection are both transformative!

As you move forward, look for ways to contribute, and create positive change. Serving others adds tremendous meaning to our lives. You have cultivated talents the world needs. Please share these generously.

Be proud of yourselves. You are extraordinary students, forged during extraordinary times. Never forget this.

President's message

President & Vice Chancellor Dr. Michael Benarroch

Class of 2025, as you chase new inspirations, I have but one request: Please, think big.

You are about to be at the centre of so much. You will shape our global society with your ideas and passions. You will redefine, reimagine, and rebuild so much.

Although you graduate today, you remain a part of our herd. You join our remarkable alumni community that is brimming with big thinkers living around the world. And now you take your place among them, writing our collective story. It is an inspiring one because, like the bison, we move forward through whatever troubles the world delivers, determined to reach a better future.

Be proud of graduating from this university. A joy of being your university’s president is meeting with people around the globe, all of whom praise our collective efforts to advance truth and Reconciliation, understand and mitigate climate change, and bolster health as a human right. Manitobans have much humility, but I assure you, on the global stage, UM is a giant.

You are the remarkable Class of 2025. Continue to pursue what you love, and believe in where that can take you. The University of Manitoba is proud of you and all you have achieved. And all you are about to do.

Congratulations, and here’s to all your big ideas.

Honorary Degree

Rosanna Deerchild

Doctor of Letters, honoris causa
Wednesday, June 4, 3:30 p.m.

Ms. Rosanna Deerchild is a Cree storyteller, journalist, poet, playwright and radio host whose voice has transformed the Canadian media and literary landscape. She is a band member of Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation with deep family roots in O-Pipon-Na-Piwin Cree Nation, and has used her platforms to amplify Indigenous voices, challenge racism and spark national conversations about truth, justice and healing.

For ten years, Deerchild has hosted Unreserved on CBC Radio One, a show dedicated to Indigenous culture, music and stories from across Turtle Island. Her interviews—with academics and activists, aunties and elders, artists and everyday people—are marked by emotional honesty, humour and a deep respect for lived experience. She also launched a CBC podcast on Indigenous history and is now a recurring actor on the television sitcom Acting Good.

A celebrated poet, Deerchild’s work has been published widely and anthologized in collections such as Post-prairie and #NotYourPrincess. Her first poetry collection, this is a small northern town, won the Aqua Books Lansdowne Prize for Poetry in 2009. Her second, Calling Down the Sky, written alongside her mother Edna Ferguson, explores the intergenerational trauma of residential schools and earned the Lowther Memorial Award in 2016. This deeply personal work inspired her debut play, The Secret to Good Tea, which premiered at the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre in 2023 to critical and community acclaim.

Deerchild has also contributed to and co-edited Gush: Menstrual Manifestos for Our Times and she co-founded the Aboriginal Writers Collective which has nurtured Indigenous literary talent for over two decades. A frequent public speaker, she has used her visibility—including a powerful appearance on the cover of Maclean’s—to address racism in Winnipeg and beyond, urging Canadians to listen, learn and act.

For her unwavering commitment to truth-telling, her literary excellence and her role in reshaping the national narrative around Indigenous identity and experience, the University of Manitoba is proud to confer upon Ms. Rosanna Deerchild the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters.

Honorary Degree

Catherine Christiane Bowler

BA (Macalester), MAR (Yale), PhD (Duke)
Friday, June 6, 9:30 a.m.

Dr. Catherine (Kate) Bowler tells the truth about life’s hardest moments. She is an antidote to a culture of algorithms that nudge us away from what is real—all the faults, vulnerabilities, sufferings and limitations of ourselves and life that give depth and shape to human experience. A raised-in-Winnipeg historian and New York Times bestselling author, she is internationally recognized for her profound contributions to public understanding of faith, resilience and imperfection.

In 2015, Bowler was diagnosed with stage IV cancer at the age of 35. With candour, grace and humour, she began writing and speaking about what it means to live when the future is uncertain. Her bestselling memoirs—Everything Happens for a Reason (and Other Lies I’ve Loved) and No Cure for Being Human (and Other Truths I Need to Hear)—have touched millions, helping readers navigate their own suffering and loss without resorting to easy answers.

She confronts these difficult topics from the pulpit of her podcast too. On her award-winning show, Everything Happens, she hosts deeply human conversations with guests like author Malcolm Gladwell, comedian Tig Notaro and political satirist Rick Mercer. No matter the medium, her voice stands out in a society preoccupied with curating faux-perfection and totting toxic positivity; she offers compassion, honesty and a vision of grace that meets people where they are.

Bowler’s academic work is foundational: her book Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel was the first and remains the most authoritative study of this uniquely American religious movement. Now a professor at Duke Divinity School, she has brought insight and clarity to a cultural theology that equates success with moral worth.

Bowler’s work reminds us that embracing life’s limitations can reveal its deepest beauty. For her contributions as a scholar, storyteller and public voice of hope, the University of Manitoba is proud to award Dr. Kate Bowler a Doctor of Letters, honoris causa.

Olive Beatrice Stanton Award for Excellence in Teaching

Her contributions and commitment have been recognized with numerous awards over the years. Beyond the university, she actively engages with educators, researchers and the public to share her expertise. She employs a variety of methods and platforms to make knowledge accessible and impactful. Her ability to bridge research and practice strengthens both the Faculty of Education and the K-12 community, extending her influence far beyond her own students.

The University of Manitoba is proud to honour Dr. Jennifer Watt with the Olive Beatrice Stanton Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Honorary Degree

Greg Selinger

BSW (Manitoba); MPA (Queen’s); PhD (LSE)
Monday, June 16 at 3 p.m.

From his early work in Winnipeg’s Inner City and North End to his leadership as Premier, Dr. Greg Selinger’s decades-long commitment to social justice and linguistic equality has had a lasting impact on Manitoba. As a social worker, educator and public servant, he has shaped policy and public life with integrity, vision and a deep sense of duty to the communities he served.

Before entering politics, Selinger worked as a social worker doing community development in partnership with underserved populations and later taught in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Manitoba. He holds a Bachelor of Social Work from UM, a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University and a PhD in Social Policy and Administration from the London School of Economics and Political Science. This academic grounding in public policy and equity informed his approach to political leadership at every level.

Selinger was first elected as a city councillor for St. Boniface, where he served on the executive committee and chaired the finance committee. He was then elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, ultimately serving as Manitoba’s Minister of Finance, Minister responsible for Francophone Affairs and, from 2009 to 2016, Premier of Manitoba.

Throughout his political career, Selinger remained steadfast in his social democratic values and consistently advocated for the vitality of Manitoba’s Francophone communities. As Minister responsible for Francophone Affairs, he ensured the implementation of all recommendations from the 1998 Chartier Report on French-language services. He supported the creation of six bilingual service centres and laid the foundation for a whole-of-government approach to supporting the development of the Francophonie—efforts that moved beyond service delivery to cultural and linguistic revitalization.

Selinger also championed access to French-language education. He supported the expansion of both French-first language and immersion school networks and played a leading role in securing full university status for the Université de Saint-Boniface. In the early 2000s, he helped set a target for French-speaking immigration and represented Manitoba in the Ministerial Conference on the Canadian Francophonie, where he was recognized as a forward-thinking leader.

Among his final contributions as Premier was drafting and tabling a bill to consolidate and protect French-language achievements in Manitoba. Though it was not passed during his tenure, the incoming government adopted it with little change in 2016 as An Act to Support the Development of the Manitoba Francophonie—a testament to the strength and foresight of Selinger’s leadership. At the same time, he championed the Path to Reconciliation Act which passed unanimously before the government changed. In both cases, unanimous legislative support for minority rights laws helps to ensure their durability.

For his exceptional contributions to public life, his advocacy for Francophone rights and education, and his enduring legacy as a Premier committed to equity and inclusion, the University of Manitoba is proud to confer upon Dr. Greg Selinger the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws.

Honorary Degree

Sister Lesley Sacouman

BA (Manitoba)
Thursday, May 15, 10 a.m.

Sister Lesley Sacouman stands at the centre of hope and belonging. A compassionate educator, community builder and faith leader, she has dedicated her life to creating sanctuaries for Winnipeg’s marginalized communities—transforming countless lives through her unwavering commitment to the service of others.

In 1963, at age 17, she joined the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, immersing herself in the heart of Winnipeg’s inner city. In 1976, she co-founded Rossbrook House, a safe haven that continues to offer alternative education, nutrition, music, leadership and Indigenous cultural programming to more than 80 children and young mothers each day.

Her advocacy and impact deepened in the decades that followed. In the 1990s, she helped create Anishinaabe Oway-Ishi, an educational and employment training program for Indigenous youth. She also co-founded Esther House, a home for women recovering from addiction. In 2004, she founded the Holy Names House of Peace—a life-affirming refuge for newcomer women. Building on that mission, she helped establish Marie Rose Place in 2013, a furnished apartment complex for newcomer women and children. At present, she is living at The Salvation Army in a transitional program for vulnerable women.

Her leadership has extended across the community and beyond, including service on the boards of The Winnipeg Foundation, the Law Society’s Access to Justice Steering Committee and UNANIMA International, a United Nations NGO dedicated to advancing human rights.

Few, if any, have impacted Winnipeggers in such intimate and enduring ways. In recognition of her transformative service, Sister Lesley has received numerous awards including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Caritas Award from the Catholic Foundation of Winnipeg, the Caring Canadian Award presented by then-Governor General David Johnston, a University of Winnipeg Honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 2006 and the University of Manitoba’s 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award for Community Service.

For her lifelong leadership and devotion to the dignity of all, and for embodying the University of Manitoba’s highest values: justice, equity, compassion and hope, the University is proud to confer upon her a Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, celebrating a lifetime of leadership and devotion to the dignity of all.
