Welcome messages

Chancellor's message

UM Chancellor Dave Angus.

Mamhtákosiwin, gigii-minojigem, yawashte, kischi-iteyhta-mashchohin, nezu annellassi, félicitations!

As Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, it is my great pleasure to commend you on the remarkable achievement of earning a degree from our great university. Welcome to the Class of 2025. Now the hard work begins: deciding what impact you want to make on the world.

This may seem daunting, but one question I ask myself at the end of the day is, did I make it a good day for someone else? Every time I’m able to answer “yes,” I know I’m doing something right. My advice would be to try this. Collect yeses and keep going. And as you expand your networks, learn from your mistakes, discover and hone passions, your impact will grow.

In short, share your talents. You leave here not only equipped with the technical skills our world demands, but also with the high ideals of citizenship and democratic living we need. These are the seeds of progress your alma mater asks you to continually sow.

Do not shy away from your responsibilities. You came here to change—to become thought leaders and influence positive change. And now, as graduates, you have proven capable of this. All that remains, is every day, ask yourself: Did I make it a good day for someone else?

Be proud of yourselves. Your university certainly is.

Dave Angus, OM, BComm (Hons)
Chancellor, University of Manitoba

President's message

President & Vice Chancellor Dr. Michael Benarroch

Class of 2025, congratulations! As you graduate from this campus after years of honing your passions and ideas, I have one small ask: be bold.

The cliché you have seen and heard in climactic speeches in TV shows and movies is true, which is why it is repeated. You are indeed our future. You are the generation of leaders who will shape and guide our society. So don’t back down from the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

Bisons charge forward with the strength of their community behind them. And you will always be a part of our herd. As graduates, you join our remarkable alumni community that spans the globe and is brimming with big thinkers. They are excited to welcome you, and to help you do bold things.

A joy of being your university’s president is meeting with people from around the world, people who praise our university’s impact in advancing truth and Reconciliation, understanding and mitigating climate change, and improving global public health, to name just a few. Manitobans may be humble, but the fact is, on the global stage, UM is a giant. Be proud of this. Let it embolden you.

You are the remarkable Class of 2025. Pursue what you love, and believe in where that can take you. The University of Manitoba is proud of you and all you have achieved. And all you are about to do.

Congratulations! Horns up!

Michael Benarroch, PhD
