Welcome messages

Chancellor's message

UM Chancellor Dave Angus.

Mamhtákosiwin, gigii-minojigem, yawashte, kischi-iteyhta-mashchohin, nezu annellassi, félicitations!

Welcome Class of 2026! The world is excited you’re here.

As Chancellor of the University of Manitoba, it is my great pleasure to award you your well-deserved parchment today. You’ve earned a degree from one of the top universities in the world, and now you may be asking, what do I do with it?

Very few of you will have a clear answer. For the rest, I offer an observation from my own journey that may illuminate yours: seize every opportunity to get out of the house and meet people. You never know which interaction is going to change your life.

As you meet people, take risks, and discover what moves you, embrace it fully. Trust that the person you've become while earning your UM degree has prepared you to meet any of life's tests. And challenges are always present. So, to offer you advice on this that has stood the test of time, I turn to Chancellor Dysart.

When the Second World War ended, graduating students were entering a new era. Chancellor Dysart told them the opportunities they—and now you—face will be difficult, and you can scarcely decline them. In accepting them, you will prove your mettle, justify the faith the University has in you, and fulfill a promise of your youth. “Therefore, go forth, and whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might!”

Dave Angus, OM, BComm (Hons)
Chancellor, University of Manitoba

President's message

President & Vice Chancellor Dr. Michael Benarroch

Class of 2026, we need you. And we need you to be bold.

We are reimagining our place in the world, how we build our economies, strengthen our communities , and forge new partnerships. This is a remarkable opportunity for you as graduating students.

As you go forth, remember that real leaders think for themselves and find new opportunities by seeing what others overlook. You’ve learned how to do this during your time here. Use it now in the world. Don’t just fulfill others’ goals. Set your own. Don’t just get things done. Bravely ask whether these are the right things to do.

The world always has challenges. Every graduating class faces them. But few graduating classes emerge during a period marked by such rapid change and new possibilities. The world is hungry for your fresh thinking and youthful leadership.

You may find yourself questioning your path as you take your first steps after graduation. But your education has given you a powerful tool to confront the challenges of our time with moral courage. Put trust in this and who you have become, and you will discover opportunities only a Bison can see.

Congratulations, and thank you for all you are about to do.

Michael Benarroch, PhD
President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Manitoba
