Dr. Mahmoud Torabi specializes in spatial statistics and small area estimation within the field of data science. His research focuses on developing innovative biostatistical methods for big data to improve the health and well-being of individuals, communities, and diverse populations.

Dr. Torabi’s research interests include biostatistics, cluster detection, longitudinal data analysis, measurement errors, small area estimation, spatial epidemiology/models, and survival analysis. His contributions to these fields have been widely recognized, with publications in prestigious journals such as Statistics in Medicine, Biometrics, and the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society.

As a research scientist at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM), Dr. Torabi leads a team focused on developing new models and techniques for population health research. This research aims to integrate generated knowledge into healthcare practices, ultimately benefiting public health. He also supervises graduate students in both master’s and PhD programs.

Dr. Torabi has made significant contributions to research on diseases such as asthma, colorectal cancer, COVID-19, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), influenza, leukemia, lung cancer, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis. He is highly respected in his field and has served the Statistical Society of Canada in various roles, including president of the Survey Methods Section in 2018. His work has earned him invitations to present at international conferences and workshops.

Biography

Dr. Mahmoud Torabi is a professor in Community Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba, with an adjunct appointment in the department of statistics. He has extensive experience in biostatistics and has contributed to the development of statistical models and methods addressing health issues related to both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Dr. Torabi earned a bachelor of science and master of science in statistics from the National University of Iran and a PhD in statistics from Carleton University, where he received the University Medal for Best Doctoral Dissertation. His PhD research focused on small area estimation, a topic he has continued to explore throughout his career.

His research interests include biostatistics, cluster detection, longitudinal data analysis, measurement errors, small area estimation, spatial epidemiology and survival analysis. He has contributed to research on diseases such as asthma, colorectal cancer, COVID-19, inflammatory bowel disease, influenza, leukemia, lung cancer, sexually transmitted diseases and tuberculosis.
