Research

Research interests

My research focuses on wheat breeding and genetics. In the breeding program, I am developing Canada Western Red Winter (CWRW) wheat varieties for production on the prairies. My genetic research investigates traits important in the breeding program, and I am particularly interested in resistance to Fusarium head blight (FHB), rust diseases, and orange wheat blossom midge. My research involves SNP marker analyses, DNA sequencing, linkage analysis, QTL mapping, association mapping, and bioinformatics. I am also interested in the use of UAV-mounted cameras/sensors to evaluate traits for breeding and genetic research.

Current research projects

  • Genetic mapping of FHB resistance, wheat midge resistance, rust (leaf, stem, stripe) resistance, winter survival, and agronomic traits
  • Map-based cloning of disease and insect resistance genes
  • Genomic selection in wheat breeding
  • CWRW wheat variety development
  • Evaluation of FHB resistance in wheat (spring, winter, durum) and triticale for variety registration
