In April 2020, the University of Manitoba successfully completed the Front and Centre Campaign raising more than $626 million, exceeding the $500 million campaign goal. The campaign created more than 700 new scholarships and bursaries, and 21 research chairs and professorships from 91,935 donors, more than 13,000 making their first gift ever to UM.

Wherever John led – Monash University in Australia; University of Regina, Western University, Memorial University in Canada – every dollar raised is connected to a beautiful story of a donor’s vision, generosity and the desire to change lives. John refers to this as when passion and giving collide

John is a member of The Associates of the I.H Asper School of Business board, the International Distinguished Entrepreneur Award committee and the James W. Burns Leadership Institute advisory board. He served on the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre board from 2012 to 2019. He passionately supports visual and performing arts and artists.

John was heavily influenced by the outstanding teachers he had throughout his life, specifically in Newfoundland and Labrador from kindergarten to his undergraduate studies at Memorial University. Through CCAE, CASE, the Harvard University Business School High Potential Leadership Program and the National Conference of Foundation Executives, John grows from the generosity and knowledge transfer of his colleagues internationally.

Terry Fox has been the greatest inspiration in John's life, influencing everything he does. In 1985, John received the Terry Fox Humanitarian Award and Scholarship and today is the board chair of the program, which celebrates the humanitarian service, determination and courage of young Canadians and supports their academic pursuits.
