Vice-Provost (Equity)

  • Dr. Tina Chen

    Dr. Tina Chen has been appointed to the newly created role of Vice-Provost (Equity), from September 1, 2023 to June 30, 2027. She previously served as Executive Lead (Equity, Diversity and Inclusion) from (2022-2023), Department Head of History (2013-2020), and Acting Director of Asian Studies (2020).

    Dr. Chen is also a Distinguished Professor of History.  Her research and teaching focuses on feminism, anti-colonial solidarities, anti-racist activism, and alternative political imaginaries in modern Chinese, Asian and World history.  Dr. Chen is a committed activist and advocate for equity, anti-oppression, and social justice at the University of Manitoba, with local and national community organizations, and within sport organizations.

More about Dr. Chen

Dr. Chen has served on the steering committee of the 2022 Building Solidarities National Forum on Anti-Asian Racism, hosted by Toronto Metropolitan University, and the National Academic Advisory Board of the 2021 National Forum on Anti-Asian Racism, hosted by UBC.

Her work has been recognized through various awards, including WXN Top 100 Women (2021), University of Manitoba Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Campbell Outreach Award (2020, Canada Race Relations Community Champion Award (2018), and YMCA/YWCA Woman of Distinction (2012). Her research is supported by national and international grants, and Dr. Chen has held visiting scholar appointments at New York University, University of New South Wales, and Beijing University. She is a member of the UM team receiving an inaugural Robbins-Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity (2023) for the project “Dismantling Ableism and Advancing Equity for Disabled Persons: Institutional Action and Accountability”.
