Summer University Advantage
Kickstart your UM journey this summer! If you’ve been admitted for Fall 2026, you can get a head start with the popular first-year seminar course ARTS 1110 – Introduction to University, refresh your skills in University Math Prep, and connect with peers in Coffee Chats for Success. Earn credit, build confidence, and start university feeling ready.
Benefits
ARTS 1110 (Introduction to University):
- Earn 3 credit hours towards your degree before the Fall term begins
- Fulfill the Written English Requirement (W) for most degree programs
- Transition more smoothly into university through a supportive summer learning environment
- Build essential writing and research skills to support your success
Coffee Chats for Success:
- Learn how to study smarter, not harder, with proven strategies for learning, memory and exam prep
- Build practical systems for time management, avoiding procrastination, and staying consistent
- Develop habits that support focus, motivation, and long-term academic success
- Get real, practical advice from upper-year students on what actually works (and what doesn't)
University Math Prep:
- Bridge the gap between high school and university-level mathematics
- Review key pre-calculus concepts in a low-stakes, hands-on setting
- Learn alongside and receive support from experienced upper-year students
- Prepare for first-year math courses such as MATH 1500, MATH 1510, and MATH 1524
Community Thursdays:
- Explore the UM campus and become more comfortable navigating your new environment
- Participate in interactive team-bonding activities with other incoming Fall 2026 students
- Develop a sense of belonging and connectedness with your campus, peers, and staff
How to Register for Summer University Advantage
This year, Summer University Advantage offers a flexible registration format, allowing you to choose the components that best fit your schedule and goals.
You can register for each component individually — participate in one, a few, or all!
Experiential Learning (EL) Recognition
Students who complete SUA can earn recognition on their Experiential Learning Record by meeting the following participation requirements:
- Attend 4 out of 8 Coffee Chats for Success
- Attend 4 out of 8 University Math Prep Tutorials
- Attend all 4 Community Thursdays
ARTS 1110 is not required for Experiential Learning recognition but can be taken alongside Summer University Advantage for academic credit.
2026 dates and times
Introduction to University (ARTS 1110)
Classes will be held July 27 - August 27, 2026
Classes will be held Mondays - Thursdays from 10:45 AM - 12:45 PM
There will be no class held on Terry Fox Day (August 3)
University Math Prep:
Tutorials will be held July 27 - August 27, 2026
Tutorials will be scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
There will be no tutorial held on Terry Fox Day (August 3)
Coffee Chats for Success:
Chats will be held July 28 - August 20, 2026
Chats will be scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
Community Thursdays:
Activities will be held on Thursdays following class (i.e., 2:00 – 3:00 PM), on July 30, August 6, 13, and 20.
Each week will feature a different fun and social activity (e.g., scavenger hunts, campus bingo)
What happens next?
Once we’ve processed your application, we’ll send an email confirming that you are registered for Summer University Advantage. This email will:
be sent to your @myumanitoba.ca email
arrive approximately ten business days after you have submitted your application
include important information about your fees and your academic record
Fees
View your tuition and fees in Aurora after registration (approximately $600.00 for domestic students and approximately $1,600.00 for international students). Tuition only applies to ARTS 1110. All other components are offered free of charge.
