Opportunities closer to home
Objective 1:
Increase access to co- designed post- secondary education in the places Indigenous students call home.
The Learning Hubs
The goal of the Learning Hubs is to create opportunities for Indigenous students to access post-secondary opportunities in their home communities. The Learning Hubs are community-driven spaces with an emphasis on realizing community-defined goals for Indigenous learners.
The Learning Hubs are open to students who are enrolled in or considering studying at any college or university in the province. Learners can use the Learning Hubs to access courses that are already offered online by their institutions and/or to connect with community-facilitated programming and supports such as mentorship, tutoring, language nests, speaker series and Elders. There is also an opportunity for post-secondary institutions and community partners to connect to explore developing in-community delivery of education and training.
Through UM’s partnership with the Mastercard Foundation’s EleV Program, funding is available to establish five Learning Hub locations. Funding agreements will be arranged with community partners and funds can be used to:
- Improve internet connectivity, ensuring that it meets bandwidth requirements for online learning and virtual classrooms.
- Set-up flexible spaces that are safe and appropriate for learning and studying.
- Provide good technology such as computers, and other equipment.
- Hire staff to support students and advance the Learning Hub goals; and
- To develop and deliver programming and services.
