Purpose of the meetings

The purpose of the Indigenous Connect meetings is to create a welcoming and safe space for Indigenous faculty, staff, students, and allies to share their work, get feedback identify gaps and opportunities for collaboration and network. Committee members are committed to sharing and promoting initiatives and events with our networks, identifying barriers to education and employment and advocating for systems change, and celebrating the achievements of Indigenous people at UM.

History of Indigenous Connect

In July 2019, Indigenous Engagement and Communications (formerly Indigenous Achievement) held two brainstorming sessions to discuss Indigenous-focused initiatives, events and programming at the University of Manitoba. The sessions indicated a need for greater communication between units and a desire to discuss opportunities for interdepartmental collaboration. Indigenous Engagement and Communications established an Indigenous Awareness Committee that meets monthly to share promising practices, programming, initiatives and events; create partnerships and opportunities to collaborate; and advance policy and systems change. In summer 2021, the committee changed its name to Indigenous Connect to reflect the connections that are made through our work.
