The fresh food company heater

How the meal plans work

Students living in residence with a meal plan can enjoy fresh, nutritious meals served daily at our dining hall - the Fresh Food Company. Simply present your Student ID card to enter the facility. Each time you enter, your ID card is swiped and you have access to all of the various food stations at the Fresh Food Company. Each meal swipe is all-you-care-to-eat.

Weekly Menu

The menu changes daily, so there’s always something new to enjoy! Love a dish? Let us know through the Table Talk app and help shape the dining experience on campus.

Add flexibility to your meal plan with FoodBucks!

FoodBucks serve as an addition to any meal plan and can be loaded directly onto your Student ID card. You have the option to add Foodbucks to your student ID card, even if you do not have a meal plan. They are perfect for those busy days when you require a quick snack between your classes. They function similarly to cash and are accepted at all UM Dining Services retail locations on campus. This includes, Tim Horton’s, Starbucks, Subway, Popeye’s, etc. Note: this does not include independently operated food locations run by UMSU or University colleges.

Do you like pizza delivery? The Pizza Pizza  franchise on Pembina Hwy is happy to accept FoodBucks, allowing you to order a late-night pizza to your room.

Important Note: FoodBucks carry over from the Fall term to the Winter term, but expire at the end of the Academic Term (at the end of April).

Frequently asked questions

1. What is a meal plan?

A meal plan is a prepaid program added to your residence fees that gives you access to meals on campus for a set period (usually a term or academic year). Instead of paying for each meal individually, students purchase a plan that includes a certain number of meals or meals per week. As a meal program, most meal plans we offer are tax free.

2. Are meal plans mandatory?

Yes, meal plans are mandatory for residents of Pembina Hall, Mary Speechly Hall, and University College Residence. For those living in Arthur V. Mauro Residence, the meal plans are optional.

3. How do meal plan swipes work?

A meal swipe gives you access to an all-you-care-to-eat experience at the Fresh Food Company. Just swipe your Student ID and enjoy a variety of fresh, delicious options! For 10 and 15 meal per week plans, meals are counted starting on Saturday and ending on Friday. Bulk plans, e.g., 80 or 100 meals per term can be used anytime but do not carryover from one term to the next.

4. What are FoodBucks?

FoodBucks give you the flexibility to grab your favorite meals on campus and can be added anytime. Use them at participating locations like Starbucks, Tim Hortons, Subway, Popeye’s and many more.

FoodBucks work just like cash on your Student ID card—but remember, they can’t be used for non-food items such as gift cards or merchandise.

5. Do unused FoodBucks roll over?

Yes, any unused FoodBucks from the Fall term are automatically carried over to the Winter term. However, at the end of the academic year, all remaining FoodBucks expire and cannot be carried into the next school year.

6. Can I change my meal plan once selected?

You can upgrade your meal plan at any time—for example, by increasing meals per week or adding FoodBucks. Downgrades are only allowed before the meal plan change deadline each term, typically about two weeks after Fall or Winter move-in. For late arrivals, a shorter adjustment window (usually 7 days after move‑in) applies

7. Is my meal plan transferable or shareable?

No, meal plans are non-transferrable and are linked to your Student ID with your name and photo, and only you can use them.

8. Can I take meals to go?

No, the fee structure for our meal plans is based on a dine-in only program. All food must be consumed in the dining hall. Single convenience snack items like bananas, apples or cookies (when available) can be taken to go.

9. What happens if I run out of FoodBucks?

You can top up your FoodBucks balance by adding funds through Dining Services. Visit the Dining Office at 202 Pembina Hall or email dining@umanitoba.ca

10. Can I use my meal plan during academic breaks?

Meal plans remain in effect during Fall and Winter term breaks, but dining hours and menu options may be modified.
Important note: Meal Plans do not carry over to the summer — they expire at the end of the academic year at the end of April.

11. What if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?

Dining Services aims to accommodate dietary needs. If you have allergies or specific dietary restrictions, speak with the Fresh Food Company management or staff that are identified under their Purple Allergy Leader program; they have received specific training and can provide food-labeling information and work with you on menu alternatives they can offer.

12. Can I see what’s on the menu before I decide to use one of my swipes?

Yes, menus for any specific meal for the current week can be viewed anytime on the FFC website
