Research achievements

Research summary

Dr. Chartier is an applied population health scientist who uses administrative data to conduct health outcomes research.

She leads developmental program evaluations using qualitative and survey methodologies to identify effective interventions and understand their impact across diverse populations.

  • In collaboration with Swampy Cree Tribal Council and First Nations organizations, she led a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) funded study examining PAX, a school-based mental health promotion initiative targeting First Nations youth.
  • In partnership with regional health authorities and Healthy Child Manitoba, she spearheaded a Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) funded evaluation of the Towards Flourishing strategy, which integrated mental health promotion into public health services for new parents.

Dr. Chartier has contributed to provincial reports on the Mental Health of Children in Manitoba, Mental Illness Among Adult Manitobans, and the Health and Well-Being of First Nations Children. She also co-led the Methamphetamine Use in Manitoba report.

Recently, she completed two population-based mental health promotion studies, with findings currently under peer review.

Biography

Dr. Chartier is a senior research scientist at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy and an assistant professor of community health sciences at the University of Manitoba. Her career began as a registered nurse in the areas of medical, surgical, and psychiatric nursing. After a decade of bedside nursing, she joined the Anxiety Disorders Research Team at St. Boniface General Hospital where she coordinated research in pharmacological and psychological interventions for people living with anxiety disorders.

During her graduate studies in community health sciences, she developed an interest and expertise in population health and intervention research, specifically in understanding which policies and practices benefited the well-being of children in Manitoba. She was contracted by Health Child Manitoba Office to lead large-scale program evaluations in the area of child care and early childhood development. Currently, Dr. Chartier has continued this work and expanded her research interests as part of the research team at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy.
