For years, music students at UM trained without a venue that matched the calibre of their education. Gifts from Marcel Desautels, Gail Asper and Michael Nesbitt helped change that. Today, the state-of-the-art Desautels Concert Hall gives students, faculty and visiting artists a premier place to perform and has quickly become a go-to destination for live performance in Winnipeg.
Helping Indigenous students start university with confidence

A strong start can shape an entire university experience. Since 2016, Qualico’s investment in the Qualico Bridge to Success Program has helped First Nations, Inuit and Métis students begin their studies with guidance, connection and a community around them. By helping students find their footing early, the program creates a stronger foundation for everything that comes next.
Law students gain real-world experience while helping Manitobans

Knowing the law is only the beginning. With support from L. Kerry Vickar, UM law students gain practical experience by working with real clients, while Manitobans receive free business law services. The experience helps students enter the profession with greater confidence and a stronger understanding of the people they serve.

A 2016 gift from The Richardson Foundation helped renew more than 100 classrooms, labs and other spaces across UM, giving students places to learn that better reflect the demands of their careers ahead.
Transforming maternal and newborn care in India

In Uttar Pradesh, India, home to more than 220 million people, better maternal and newborn health depends on a public health system that works at every level. Gates Foundation funding has supported UM’s long-term partnership with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to improve how care is delivered across the state. Together, those efforts are helping save tens of thousands of newborn lives each year.
Expanding access to engineering education

Manitoba needs engineers to help tackle the challenges ahead. A 2020 gift from Gerry and Barbara Price helped the Price Faculty of Engineering expand its capacity, creating room for more students to study engineering at UM. Today, that means hundreds more future engineers are preparing to design solutions, strengthen communities and contribute to Manitoba’s economy.
