Residency Program
The University of Manitoba provides residency training in Cardiac Surgery. A faculty of 9 surgeons performs a total of approximately 1200 adult cardiac operations per year. All surgery is performed at St. Boniface Hospital. The spectrum of adult cardiac surgery includes coronary artery bypass grafting, valve repair and replacement, repair of congenital defects, minimal access surgery, arrhythmic ablation, endovascular stenting and thoracic aortic reconstructions. No cardiac surgery is performed in the pediatric age group in the Province of Manitoba nor is cardiac transplantation. Training in both of these areas is provided at the University of Alberta in Edmonton through a Royal College approved Inter-University Affiliation Agreement. University of Manitoba has an integrated Cardiac Sciences Program including Cardiac Surgery, Cardiology, Cardiac Anaesthesia and Critical Care. Teaching and clinical exposure is done in a multi-disciplinary team approach and this offers a unique environment for learning.
