  • Dr. Mark G. Torchia (he/him)

    Dr. Mark Torchia, Dipl.B.T., MS, PhD, is the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning) and the Executive Director of the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning, a role he has had since 2011. Previous to that, Mark had a 30-year career as a clinical scientist in the Department of Surgery with St. Boniface General Hospital, the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, and the Health Sciences Centre.

    He was also the Director of the Medical Pre-clerkship Program for the Max Rady College of Medicine and continues as an associate professor of Surgery.

Dr. Torchia has founded three successful medical device companies, including Monteris Medical. He is the author of numerous academic papers, three medical textbooks, and holds many patents.Mark is a winner of the prestigious Earnest C. Manning Principal Prize and also the inaugural Governor General of Canada’s Award for Innovation.

  • Support the continued programming of The Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning
  • Provide leadership toward post-pandemic teaching and learning strategic considerations
  • Advance the Office of Experiential Learning (EL), EL Advisory Committee, and EL strategic planning
  • Develop and launch the Institute for Higher Education Research
  • Support the development and initiation of a classroom anti-racism campaign or program across UM within the context of the EDI framework
  • Integrate and operationalize the Learning Space Standards and Framework across UM
  • Provide leadership within the context of UM digital strategy initiatives
