The Department of Medical Microbiology operates and maintains several pieces of equipment that are used by many PIs located in various departments throughout the Bannatyne campus. This includes 2 Steris autoclaves located in Room 517 BMSB that are solely used for the sterilization of liquids and solids including media, agar, buffers, tips, glassware, and plastic ware. A single Gettinge autoclave located in Room 515 BMSB is used solely for the sterilization of biohazardous waste. All biohazardous waste is disposed of properly after autoclaving. To ensure proper functioning all autoclaves are tested monthly by challenge testing using biological indicator containing spores. All autoclaves are run Monday to Thursday from 7:00AM to 2:30PM.

The department is also equipped with a Barnstead MP-12A mega pure distillation glass still that is located in Room 517 BMSB. This unit provides highly purified water that is available Monday to Friday 7:00AM to 4:00PM. Ice is also available in Room 517 BMSB daily. The department also operates a Steris washer located in Room 515 BMSB daily.

All of the above instruments are run and maintained by a sole operator Stephen Wayne. He is located in Room 515/539 6:30AM to 2:30PM Monday to Friday and can be reached at 789-3895 for any questions or concerns.
