Computer Accounts - Usage Agreement
The use of University of Manitoba computer accounts by all eligible individuals is subject to and expressly conditioned upon acceptance, without modification, of this Usage Agreement, as may be amended from time to time by the University. This Usage Agreement defines the responsibilities and obligations for all users of all computer systems and networks owned and operated by the University.
USE OF YOUR USERID:
Your computer account is for your use only, and not to be shared with anyone, including friends or family members. You are responsible for all actions performed with the use of your accounts. By accepting a userid you also agree to use it responsibly.
Computer use, other than for your University-related work, is a privilege which can be revoked by the University at any time for administrative or other reasons, or for misuse.
USE OF COMPUTER SYSTEMS AND NETWORKS:
You agree to comply with all applicable laws, including The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Manitoba), The Personal Health Information Act (Manitoba), The Manitoba Human Rights Code, and the Copyright Act and you agree not to use the University's computer facilities, network or your computer account in any way that is illegal, or to do things that are illegal (including infringing copyright).
You agree to abide by all University policies and procedures, as they may be amended from time to time.
You acknowledge that you have read, understood and agreed to abide by all applicable requirements and guidelines set out on the University's copyright website as they may be amended from time to time.
Confirmation of University computer accounts may require the use of personal information from the Human Resources Information System to verify your identity and employment status.
MISUSE OF COMPUTING PRIVILEGES: Any failure to comply with this Usage Agreement may result in the following:
University discipline up to and including dismissal, expulsion and/or any other action in accordance with applicable University policies and collective agreements. In cases of financial loss to the University, restitution may be sought.
IST may disconnect any machine connected to a University operated network, including faculty owned computing and networking equipment which does not have current security facilities installed and which could jeopardize the integrity and operation of the University network.
The University reserves the right to charge a fee, to be determined by the University, to reactivate accounts that have been suspended for misuse of computer privileges.
SOME EXAMPLES OF MISUSE ARE:
Use of or access to another person's system, files, email or other data without that person's permission unless authorized by the Vice President (Administration) or their delegate.
Circumventing or removing security controls, or any attempts to circumvent or remove security controls, on any system or network.
Engaging in any activity that might be purposefully harmful to systems or to any data stored thereon.
Intentionally placing any malware onto a system or network.
Sending fraudulent, harassing, threatening or obscene messages.
Transmitting commercial advertisements, solicitations or promotions for any other commercial purpose not authorized by the University administration.
Intentionally accessing or collecting pornography or other material inappropriate to a public workplace except when such collection is necessary for a research project approved by the University Ethics Committee.
Sending unauthorized bulk email (spam).
Incidental use of Electronic Information Resources for personal use is acceptable but is limited to responsible activities that minimize the disruption of University business while attending to necessary personal affairs.
Using the systems or networks for personal financial gain, excluding outside professional activity in accordance with University policy.
Unauthorized use of the "University" name.
Copying, downloading or adapting third-party copyrighted works which contravene the Copyright Act and University licences, agreements and copyright guidelines.
Engaging in any other activity that does not comply with the referenced policy.
The University reserves the right to change or modify any of the terms and conditions contained in this usage agreement at any time and in its sole discretion. Any changes or modifications will be effective upon posting to the University's website. Your continued use of your computer account following the posting of any such changes or modifications will constitute your acceptance of such changes or modifications. You should review this usage agreement regularly to ensure that you remember and understand the terms and conditions that apply to use of your computer account.
The University requires users to read and accept the Usage Agreement on an annual basis.
This usage agreement shall be governed by the laws of the province of Manitoba without regard to its conflict of law provisions. You consent and submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located in the province of Manitoba in all disputes arising out of or relating to the use of your computer account and this usage agreement.
