The Department of Psychiatry has long been committed to a well-rounded, robust training experience in the psychotherapies, with curricula at the undergraduate and postgraduate medical education levels along with various opportunities for continuing professional development.
Undergraduate education includes formal instruction within the pre-clerkship psychiatry curriculum, a seminar series provided during the core clerkship rotation in psychiatry, and available clerkship elective opportunities.
Psychotherapy training has historically been considered a strength of the residency training program at the University of Manitoba, long surpassing the minimum training requirements set by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This commitment to excellence in psychotherapy training remains in the shift to a competency-based medical education (CBME) curriculum. Specific details of training are available in the overview of Postgraduate Education provided elsewhere on this site. In brief, the training program has dedicated longitudinal supervision of various psychotherapeutic modalities beginning in the latter half of the PGY1 year and continuing through PGY5. Psychodynamic psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) are areas of particular expertise in the department. As well, all residents have a longitudinal Family Therapy supervision during their PGY2 year.
Manitoba also offers recognized subspecialty training in Child & Adolescent and Geriatric Psychiatry, with support to fully meet psychotherapy training expectations for both programs. Senior elective experience in various psychotherapeutic modalities is available and encouraged.
The Department of Psychiatry richly supports continued professional development in the psychotherapies through Continuing Medical Education, with visiting speakers in the Grand Rounds series and workshops throughout the year. There is a bimonthly meeting of the Psychotherapy Supervisors Group over the academic year to foster supervisory expertise. In recognition of the founding department head and in conjunction with the Manitoba Psychiatric Association, the department hosts the annual Sisler Institutes of Psychiatry, a conference dedicated to the advancement of psychotherapy.
