Joseph Dahmen will speak about recent projects using emergent materials, including mycelium biocomposites, raw earth, and the Waterfront Toronto redevelopment.

BIO
Joseph Dahmen is an expert on sustainable design using emergent architectural materials. He is assistant professor at the School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the University of British Columbia, where he is a faculty associate of the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and directs the Studio for Form and Energy. His research and creative projects have been featured in Canadian Architect, the CBC, Dwell , the Globe and Mail, Architizer, Fast Company, and the Financial Post. He co-directs the transdisciplinary design firm AFJD with Amber Frid-Jimenez, Canada Research Chair in Art and Design Technology.  Dahmen is also co-founder and Director of Sustainability at Watershed Materials LLC, a start-up company funded by the US National Science Foundation that applies advances in nanotechnology to produce low-carbon sustainable masonry materials. He received a Master of Architecture from MIT, where he studied with John Ochsendorf and Yung Ho Chang.
