What is Social Work?

Social work is a helping profession and an academic discipline. The goal of social work is to improve the well-being of individuals by helping them use their own and community resources. Social work values are equality, social justice, human dignity, and democratic rights and freedoms for all. The profession pays most attention to vulnerable, oppressed and/or marginalized groups, such as people who live in poverty, people with disabilities, Aboriginal people, survivors of abuse, members of racial, ethnic or sexual minorities, children, the elderly, and many others.

The major fields of social work include:

  • Child Welfare
  • Mental Health
  • Corrections
  • School Social Work
  • Primary Health Care
  • Community Development

Social workers can be employed in governmental, non-profit, or private social service agencies. Usually they work as part of a team, but can also provide services to clients on one-to-one basis. Social work positions are available in Manitoba.
