The Clerkship


The Clerkship consists of the third and fourth years of medical school where students spend time caring for patients. The Introduction to Clerkship program helps students transition from the classroom to clinical sites before they start the Clinical Clerkship.

Clinical Clerkship
The Clinical Clerkship consists of 6-week rotations in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery along with the Multi-Specialty rotations in Anaesthesia, Community Health Sciences, Emergency Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Otolaryngology. Students get an opportunity to pursue their own interests during the fourth-year Electives both within and outside University of Manitoba teaching sites. One afternoon per rotation, Clerkship students gather together for an Academic Half-Day. During the Clerkship, students also have the opportunity to pursue exchange programs with selected universities in other countries.

Following the Clerkship rotations, fourth-year students receive a course in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and organize a refresher course to prepare themselves for the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination, Part I.

Electives
The elective program is an opportunity for self education in an area of the student's own interest.  The aim of electives is to improve the student’s ability to function as a physician. Students in all medical schools have Electives and many pursue electives at other schools or affiliated clinical sites.
