This required course for students in the School of Art provides an opportunity to directly experience many of the art works that they will study during their first year at the School. The course allows students to focus on key works of historical importance on exhibition at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Weisman Art Museum (designed by Frank Gehry) and the Walker Art Center. The Minneapolis Institute of Art has some of the largest and most varied displays of world art from the earliest stages of civilization to the 20th century. The Walker Art Center is a leading gallery of contemporary art. The field trip takes place over three days with various faculty members as chaperones.

By the end of the course, the student will have had the opportunity to:

  • Consider key works of historical significance with a direct experience of the art object
  • Experience contemporary art
  • Learn to use art exhibitions as resources for learning about art
  • Develop an understanding of art in its national and regional contexts
  • Learn how to talk, analyse, and write about art through direct observation
