All classes begin at 7:00 pm. The registration desk will be open from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm each week.  Students are asked to check in each week.  Light refreshments will be served during check in.

March 14 - The Passionate Eye: Looking at Our Health System
     

In the first episode of this 5th season of Mini-Medical School, we will take a critical look at the challenges facing the Canadian health care system and health care policy makers.

 March 21 - Back...To the Future
 

Pain in the lower back or low back pain is a common concern, affecting up to 90% of people at some point in their lifetime. Up to 50% will have more than one episode. Low back pain is not a specific disease, rather it is a symptom that may occur from a variety of different processes. We’ll go back in time and look at the natural history of walking upright, look at today’s medical and surgical treatments and tomorrow’s  promising developments.

March 28 - Trouble in Hell's Kitchen
 

Dangers lurking in the kitchen? The session will explore the dangers in the food chain and interventions that ensure safety of our food supply. How about dangers on your plate? It’s estimated that as many as 1.2 million Canadians may be affected by food allergies and these numbers are increasing, especially among children. The second topic of the evening will help you understand and manage the risks associated with food allergens.

April 4 - An Amazing Race

More than 4,000 Canadians are waiting for an organ transplant to save their lives. Last year, only 1,803 transplants were performed. Many patients remain on waiting lists – and time is ticking. For those who receive an organ, it is the start of another journey.

 April 11 - Real Survivors
 

What’s your chance of surviving a heart attack? It just got better with the introduction of new pre-hospital emergency medicine treatments in Winnipeg. We’ll describe how paramedics, emergency physicians and cardiologists are working together to improve treatment of acute myocardial infractions. In part 2 of the evening, we’ll talk about how surgery can help when medical treatments are not enough.

 April 18 - On and Off the Map
 

Whether around the corner, down the street or across the globe,  health problems of others can impact our own lives. This session will look at the health status of Manitobans and that of populations around the globe. We’ll explore local and international efforts to improve of health, reduce disparities, and protection us against threats that disregard national borders..
