Government loan programs (Canada Student Loans and Manitoba Student Aid) are very supportive of medical students, and are an integral part of most students’ financial plan.
The Manitoba Medical College Foundation and University of Manitoba bursary programs have been developed to assist students in financial need. In addition, we have a variety of loan funds that can be accessed for short-term emergency situations.
Manitoba Health has initiated an incentive program Medical Student/Resident Financial Assistance Program (MSRFAP) to help ensure Manitoba students return to practice in the province. Students can access $15,000 to $20,000 a year for up to 4 years during their clerkship and residency if they agree to provide service once their training is complete.
The Canadian Medical Association will provide financial counseling to students through MD Management. Most banks are willing, even eager, to set up lines of credit for students who have been accepted into medical programs.
