Since 2004, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Manitoba has been exploring the feasibility of acquiring a multiuser, integrated electronic Curriculum Management System. The goal of this CMS is to provide Medical Students and Faculty a state-of-the-art technology for knowledge transfer and to enhance communication, collaboration, and information sharing. The CMS will establish centralized information management and administration procedures and will provide staff and students with a common suite of educational technology tools.
Dr. Dean Sandham has been a strong proponent of the Curriculum Management System and he has appointed Dr. Sat Sharma, Dr. Bruce Martin, Ms. Aarti Paul, Mr. Dean Yergens and Mr. Keith McConnell to spearhead this initiative. Lessons learned from the CMS pilot project are the guiding force. The Steering Committee and the CMS working groups will consult widely with stakeholders and encourage continued feedback to enhance the system. A phased approach to the development and rollout of the CMS solution is planned as follows:
Phase I – Curriculum delivery and communications portal to be developed with a user-friendly interface and made available to students, faculty and staff for the academic year 2009 – 2010.
Phase II – Accreditation, curriculum renewal, question bank, clinical procedure logging and undergraduate and postgraduate evaluation tools to be developed and made available for the academic year 2010 – 2011.
We are very excited about this made-in-Manitoba initiative and look forward to taking our teaching, learning, evaluation and communication within the Faculty of Medicine to a new level through the Curriculum Management System.
