Email Communication

All communication with applicants is via email.  Please ensure your email account is set to receive messages from ugadmit@cc.umanitoba.ca so that our letters do not end up in your junk mail or trash folders.

Referee Letters

  • Do not submit referee letters with your application.  The Admissions Office will contact you when the documents are due (usually December for Manitoba applicants and February for Out-of-Province applicants).
  • Choose your referees wisely.  It is advisable you choose referees that have known you for a minimum of two years.
  • When asking a potential referee to provide a letter of reference for you, please ensure they know they will be required to complete the Admissions Office documentation as well as a letter of support.  Your referees should also know that you are unable to change your referees once your application has been submitted (i.e. your referee must be committed to providing the reference for you.)
  • All applicants are responsible for ensuring their referees submit the required documentation to the Admissions Office.
  • The required documentation will be posted on the Admissions Website for your referees to access.  Your referee should send the documents directly to the Admissions Office on your behalf.
  • If your referee letters are not received, the Admissions Office will contact you in March to inform you.  If you are not contacted, you can assume that your letters were received and your application is complete.

Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)

  • The Faculty of Medicine conducts admission interviews in a multi-station format.  This was developed by McMaster University and is being used by a number of Canadian Medical schools and other professional faculties.
  • Applicants are sequestered for approximately 5 hours on the day of the MMI.
  • Each group of students will go through a set number of stations (approximately 12), with 2 minutes to read the question and 8 minutes to discuss it with the interviewer (the timing may be changed from year to year).  A central intercom is used to alert applicants when to move from station to station.
  • MMI's are designed to explore such qualities as communications skills, integrity, honesty, reliability, conscientiousness, responsibility, self-assessment skills, approach to learning, motivation, leadership and ethics.
  • Applicants will be interacting one-on-one with a number of interviewers.  The evaluation of responses is conducted using standardized criteria.
  • MMI dates are confirmed in January and applicants being invited for interview will be notified at that time.  The MMI is usually conducted in late February and early March.
  • An applicant's specific interview date and time will be confirmed in February.
  • Applicants must attend the MMI on the date and time they are scheduled.  A failure to participate or attend the scheduled date will result in your application no longer being considered.

Aboriginal Applicant Pool

  • Applicants from all provinces and territories are encouraged to declare their First Nations, Metis or Inuit heritage.
  • Applicants will be required to submit documentation to support their declaration of Aboriginal ancestry (a certified copy of a Status or Treaty card; a certified copy of a Metis membership card; a certified copy of a Nunavut Trust Certificate card, roll number or any other proof accepted by Inuit communities).  This documentation must be included with your application.
  • Applicants will be invited to participate in both the MMI and a panel interview (please refer to the Applicant Information Bulletin).
  • In January, applicants will receive instructions regarding the submission of an Autobiographical essay which will be due in early February.

Bilingual Applicant Pool

The Faculty of Medicine has established a Bilingual (French and English) applicant pool for the 2012 - 2013 session, coincident with the expansion of existing undergraduate bilingual programs that currently exist in partnership with the University of Ottawa, L'Universite de Sherbrooke, and the existing bilingual Family Medicine Postgraduate Stream.  To determine eligibility for the Bilingual applicant pool, please refer to the current Applicant Information Bulletin.

MD/PhD Program Applicant Pool

The Faculty of Medicine is committed to strengthening and expanding the existing MD/PhD Program to recruit and retain students with academic excellence, evidence of sustained and productive research experience, and strong potential to become a physician scientist.  To determine eligibility for the MD/PhD Program, please refer to the current Applicant Infomation Bulletin.

Transcripts

  • When you apply in October, two (2) official transcripts (from all of the post-secondary institutes you have attended) must be ordered and forwarded directly to Enrolment Services, 424 University Centre, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, MB  R3T 2N2.  These must be received by the deadline specified in the Applicant Information Bulletin or your application will no longer be considered. 
  • All applicants who attended the MMI, must submit an unofficial (i.e. from the web) transcript to Enrolment Services no later than May 15, 2012 to be considered for admission.
  • All courses must be completed and grades assigned to those courses by June 29, 2012 to be considered. 
  • A final official transcript must be received no later than June 29, 2012.  Late transcripts will not be accepted and no grade changes will be considered after this date.

Early Admission Letters of Offer

  • Go out via email May 15, 2012.
  • Candidates have five (5) working days to respond.  The Admissions Office will assume that an applicant does not want to be considered for a seat at the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine if the candidate fails to respond within those five business days.
  • If you do not receive an Early Admission Letter, it does not mean we are not considering you.  Please ensure your official transcript has been sent to Enrolment Services.
  • Further offers of admission, waitlist and rejection letters will go out on June 1, 2012.  If you do not receive an email on this date, please contact the Admissions Office at ugadmit@cc.umanitoba.ca

AGPA Considerations

  • Although meeting the minimum requirements (as published in the Applicant Information Bulletin) makes you eligible for consideration, it is important to be competitive within the applicant pool for that year.
  • Each application cycle is different and the applicant pool or cohort varies from year to year.  The same scores on an application from year to year may result in a different outcome based on the applicant pool.
  • Remember that for final year courses that were in progress at the time of your application, these were NOT included in your AGPA calculation (i.e. we calculate AGPA for all undergraduate courses completed as of the published deadline for applications in October).
  • If you were invited for the MMI and you submitted your final transcript by the June 29 deadline, your final year courses would have been used to calculate your AGPA in May/June.

MCAT Considerations

  • The MCAT exam can not be waived and must be written during the acceptable test dates indicated in the Applicant Information Bulletin.
  • Although meeting the minimum requirements (as published in the Applicant Information Bulletin) makes you eligible for consideration, it is important to be competitive within the applicant pool for that year.
  • All applicants must release their scores to the University of Manitoba in order for the score to be used towards the application.  If an applicant fails to release a score by the published deadline for applications in October, the score will not be used.

Student Affairs (Bursaries, Awards, Loans)

  • The Student Affairs Office in the Faculty of Medicine is available to assist students with their financial needs such as bursaries, awards or loans upon acceptance into the program.
  • The office can also assist students with counseling and career planning.

Information For Non-admitted Applicants 

  • Our office received more than 900 applications for the 2011 - 2012 application cycle for 110 places in the Class of 2015.  This was highly competitive and there are many applicants who were disappointed at not being extended an invitation for admission.
