Annual Award Competitions

B.Sc.(Med.) Interim Awards - Sponsored by MMSF
Call for applications sent annually between January and March to all B.Sc.(Med.) students who have successfully completed their first term. Normally there are four $1,000 awards available; Morris Neaman Memorial Award x 2 awards Dr. Norman and Margaret Corne Memorial Award MMSF/Mr. Justice James E. Wilton Memorial Award.

Please note: Call for applications is generally sent in January but dependent upon a variety of factors may not be sent until as late as March.

Requirements for the application:

  1. Research Report—No more than four (4) double-spaced pages exclusive of references, essential figures and tables.
    Please send all components of the application as one (1) pdf document.
  2. Letter of Support from Primary Supervisor—This letter is essential and carries weight in the selection process.
    The letter should clearly state the student’s contribution to the design of the research project. As well, address the future direction of the project and potential impact of the research.
    If the supervisor has more than one candidate, please rank accordingly. The supervisor is to submit the letter electronically (scanned with signature in place) directly to the program office. 

    The following criteria will be used in assessing the project:
    - Letter of support from primary supervisor
    - Clarity of the written presentation
    - Methodology (sophistication, in relation to further research work)
    - Appropriate interpretation of data
    - Relevance to Medicine
    - Impact on Medicine


Richard Hoeschen Award for B.Sc.(Med) Supervisors
Call for applications sent annually between January and March to all B.Sc.(Med.) Supervisors. The MMSF (Manitoba Medical Service Foundation) and  St. Boniface Hospital Research sponsor this award in the name of Richard Hoeschen.

This award commemorates the creative and innovative spirit of Richard Hoeschen and allows for the supervisor to offset operating expenses incurred as a supervisor of a B.Sc. Med) student at the University of Manitoba. The award can be up to $4,000/per year and is administered by MMSF.

Dr. John M. Embil Publication Prizefor B.Sc.(Med.) Program

This award is for a student who has successfully completed the B.Sc.(Med.) Program who is the first or second author of the manuscript of a peer reviewed research publication arising from his/her B.Sc.(Med.) research project and has a manuscript published or in press no later than August 1 of the third year of the student's undergraduate medical training.

The recipient will receive $1,000 and a plaque. Click to see the specific terms of the award. Applications must include a letter of support from the primary supervisor as well as the submitted and accepted manuscript.
