General Information on French Courses

Beginners who never studied French, or never completed Grade 12 High School French:

If you completed Grade 12 High School French more than 5 years ago:

Successful completion of FREN 1152 and FREN 1154 allows one to take FREN 1200, the gateway course to more advanced French courses in the department.

 

If you completed Grade 12 High School French in the past 5 years or have a minimum grade of 'C' in FREN 1152 and FREN 1154:

FREN 1190 is taken by students who graduated in French Immersion or who have High School Français 300. Only these two courses lead to a major or minor in French.

 

Oral French

If you completed Grade 12 High School French, but not in French Immersion:

If you are already able to speak French with some fluency or completed Grade 12 High School in French Immersion:

The language of instruction in all French courses except FREN 1152, FREN 1154
and FREN 1200 is French.
In courses FREN 1152, FREN 1154 and FREN 1200, at the discretion of the instructor, English may be used to clarify difficult points of grammar and critical analysis of literature.
