UM students

University of Manitoba students have access to Recreation Services facilities and amenities through the Sport and Rec Fee.

  • This fee supports the University of Manitoba's commitment to active living, sports and recreation. The Sport and Rec Fee is assessed to all University of Manitoba students and paid as a part of your student fees (excludes those with existing agreements precluding the payment of service fees).

    To activate your UM student account with Recreation Services:

    • Fill out the form below, either online or in person
    • Bring it with your UM Student ID to the Active Living Centre Customer Service Desk
    • Completing the student access form allows us to activate your account in our system, giving you access.

Strong Start consultation

Take advantage of our Strong Start Program – a free, 30-minute consultation with a certified fitness attendant for members and students. You’ll get help with your fitness goals and discover activities that meet your needs, and that you enjoy, so you’ll be motivated to stay active.

Informal recreation

Recreation Services promotes healthy lifestlye choices through unstructured, drop-in use of our recreation and fitness facilities. We currently offer over 800 hours per week of convenient gym, pool, ice-rink, court sport and studio times for informal recreation.  Some of the activities that you can try during these times include:

  • Court sports including tennis, badminton, squash, racquetball and table tennis
  • Volleyball, basketball and walleyball
  • Leisure skating and stick and puck skating
  • Lane swimming and diving
  • Circuit training

Recreation equipment

Forgot your shampoo? Lost your racquetball? Broke a skate lace? No problem. Our customer service desks carry a full complement of toiletries and sport equipment, including balls, birdies, skate laces, hockey pucks, and swim goggles and caps. Availability may vary by location.

Day-use lockers

All members and drop-in users are welcome to use our day-use lockers at no charge. Users can bring their own lock, and rental locks are available. Please remember that there is no overnight storage in these lockers, and we empty them at the end of each day.

Buddy Day

The 15th of every month is Buddy Day! Members can bring a friend free of charge to join in a workout, swim, game of squash, fitness class or whatever it is you want to do! Your buddy will need to bring photo ID to enter the facility.

Membership freeze/medical hold

Members who have a 12-month membership may place a hold on their membership for 30, 60, or 90 sequential days for a non-refundable fee of $15 plus GST, payable at the time of your request.

  • You can freeze your term twice every 12 months for a maximum of 3 months combined. 
  • You can notify us about a membership freeze up to the day you would like your hold to begin. 
  • A membership freeze cannot be back-dated. 
  • Freeze dates may not be adjusted once a request has been made. 
  • One membership freeze per application form
  • You can freeze your dependent, locker and towel memberships at no additional cost.

Medical hold: You can place a medical hold on your membership at no charge. A letter from a medical doctor is required within 30 days of the patient assessment to qualify. A medical freeze is available for all lengths of membership. 

Upgrade and save

As a member, you can upgrade your membership to a longer contract within 30 days of your original purchase date and pay only the difference!

U of M Student Lifestyle Membership

Purchase a membership before you graduate and receive the student rate for a full year. After one year at the lifestyle rate, you will continue to receive a discounted alumni rate.

Parking lottery

Do you have a routine where you visit our facilities during the day? You may be able to save on parking. Our parking lottery allows members to park for just $30/month near the Active Living Centre. That's less than $1.50 per business day! The parking pass is valid for a specific time every day, so this opportunity is an excellent fit for those members who stick to a routine.

NIRSA Health and Wellness Passport Program

Visiting another school? Use their recreation centre for free when you travel!

Recreation Services is a participating member of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Health & Wellness Passport Program. This program provides free access for faculty and staff that are Recreation Services members at the recreation facilities of other participating schools. Students may also qualify if they are both Recreation Services and NIRSA members.

To register, verify that the school you are visiting is a participating member and send an email to tanya.angus@umanitoba.ca requesting a Passport voucher. NIRSA staff will then email you a passport within two business days.

UM student off-term and student partner memberships

Off-term memberships
If you are an active UM student currently not enrolled in classes, you can purchase a discounted student membership for the term you are not enrolled in.

To purchase your membership, visit one of our Customer Service Desk locations with your UM Student ID card.

The off-term rate for the 2019 fall term is $100 + GST. Membership starts September 1 and expires December 31.


Student partner membership
A student's partner can purchase a Fall, Winter, or Spring/Summer term membership for $35 per month provided that the primary student member has an active pass for the Fall and/or Winter term. The partner must provide ID at time of purchase to confirm their place of residence is the same as the primary student member.
 

University of Manitoba staff and alumni rates

The longer your term of membership, the lower your monthly rate.

Full time, permanent staff members may qualify for our payroll deduction program. With your membership in place, your spouse or partner can receive the staff rate as well.

Faculty and staff

Active Transport Pass: If you prefer to cycle or jog to work we offer an active transport pass for both campus locations. The Fort Garry Active Transport Pass gives you access to shower facilities at the Max Bell Centre for $2 per day or $10 per month. The Bannatyne pass provides access to the Joe Doupe Recreation Centre shower facilities for the same rates.


To be eligible for the Faculty/Staff or Active Transport rate a valid UM staff card is required at the time of registration. Visit us at the Active Living Centre Customer Service Desk to sign up.
 

New alumni

The Lifestyle Membership is available at a discounted rate for all new U of M alumni. To qualify, UM students must register in their last term prior to the expiration of their current student access. This membership category is available for only the first year immediately after graduation.

Want to be active together? Sign up with your partner and receive 25% off our adult rate or pay the same rate as your partner for all other membership rates. Some conditions may apply. Contact our customer service desk at 204-474-6100 for details.

Daily users receive access to all membership facilities including our group fitness classes. Please note that facility access varies throughout the year. Please check our Recreation schedules for facility availability or download our mobile app.

Payment options

You can pay your membership dues with Visa, MasterCard, debit card, cash or Recreation Services gift certificates. Membership dues are not refundable or transferable (except for medical reasons).

  • Payment plan

    Monthly payment options are available for some 8- and 12-month membership plans. A one-time administration fee of $25 (per adult membership) is required to activate a monthly payment plan. To see if you qualify, contact our customer service desk at 204.474.6100.

Try us out before you join

  • One-week trial

    Interested in purchasing a membership but not sure if Recreation Services is right for you? Take advantage of our one week trial. The trial gives you up to seven visits for only $20, a value of up to $91! If you decide to buy a membership within the 7-day trial, we will deduct the price of the trial from your membership purchase.

  • 10-visit flex pass

    Get 10 visits for the low price of $99. Your pass gives you access to all Recreation Services facilities, group fitness classes, and even yoga, and you can come any time during the calendar year!

  • One-month trial

    Looking for something a bit longer than a one-week trial? A one-month trial is available for $100 and you can purchase one more than once. The one-month trial is not eligible for a membership upgrade.

Monthly locker rental

If you are a regular gym user, we recommend that you rent a locker for the term of your membership.  We have lockers available to rent in all three of our locker rooms.

  • Half-locker rental: $10.50 /month
  • Full-locker rental: $17 /month

You can start your locker rental at ANY time after your membership begins. The cost is pro-rated at the time of purchase to expire on the same date as your membership.

Day-use lockers

Day use lockers are available in each locker room and throughout our facilities. You can bring your own lock, or rent/purchase a lock at the customer service desk.

Do not leave your lock overnight on a day-use locker.  Our staff will open these locks at end of day and the locker contents will be held at the customer service desk for 30 days.

Always use a lock and avoid leaving valuables visible and unattended. Recreation Services is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

Towel service

Enjoy a fresh, clean towel with every visit with our membership towel service.

  • One towel at a time: $9/month
  • Two towels at a time: $12.50/month

Our larger towels are available only for members with towel service.

Members and drop-in users can rent our standard-size towels for $1 at the customer service desk.

You can purchase towel service at ANY time after your membership begins. The cost is pro-rated at the time of purchase to expire on the same date as your membership.
