UMSU Health and Dental Plan

Am I enrolled in the Health & Dental Plan?

Enrolment in the Health & Dental Plan is not automatic for all students.  Check your Aurora account summary when you register each year and each time you revise your registration. 

  • If the UMSU Health & Dental Fees have been charged, you will be automatically enrolled in the plan until August 31, unless you opt-out before the deadline.
  • If the UMSU Health & Dental Fees have not been charged, you will be covered only if you opt-in before the deadline.

How do I opt-out?

Students already covered by an equivalent plan (such as a parent or spouse’s employee benefit plan) can opt-out of the UMSU plan.  Opting-out is an online process that must be completed every school year before the deadline.

  • Check your Aurora account summary to ensure you were charged the UMSU Health & Dental Fees. 
  • Before opting-out, consider whether it’s beneficial to be covered under both plans to maximize coverage and eliminate out-of-pocket costs.
  • If you choose to opt-out, visit ihaveaplan.ca and follow the instructions under “Opt Outs” from the menu on the right before the deadline.
  • Be prepared to upload proof of alternative health and/or dental coverage (such as a copy of your benefits card or a letter from your parent or spouse’s employer).  Your document must indicate your name, the name of the insurance company, the policy number, and whether coverage is for health and/or dental.
  • Check whether the e-mail you receive is final confirmation of a successful opt-out.  Additional review and/or information may be required.
  • Keep all e-mails you receive.  You may be asked to provide them as proof at a later date.
  • With a successful opt-out, the UMSU Health & Dental Fees will be reversed on your Aurora account after the deadline to change coverage.

How do I opt-in?

Students who have not been automatically enrolled may have an opportunity to self-enrol, or opt-in. Self-enrolment must be completed every school year before the deadline.

  • Check your Aurora account summary to ensure you were not charged the UMSU Health & Dental Fees.
  • Visit ihaveaplan.ca
  • Determine whether you are eligible to self-enrol by reviewing the information under “Self Enrolment” from the menu on the right.
  • If eligible, follow the instructions to self-enrol before the deadline.
  • Proof of eligibility (such as a copy of your Aurora tuition breakdown) will be required.
  • Payment will be required with your application.

How do I enroll my spouse and/or child(ren)?

Families are not automatically covered by the UMSU Health & Dental Plan.  However, you have an opportunity to enrol your spouse and/or child(ren) in the plan.  Family enrolment must be completed every school year before the deadline.

  • Visit ihaveaplan.ca
  • Follow the instructions under “Couple & Family Enrolments” from the menu on the right before the deadline.
  • Payment will be required with your application.
