September 2012 - CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:
Sifton Road Construction
The University is currently constructing an interim access road off of Sifton Road to service maintenance requirements related to the interim use of Southwood Lands as a passive recreation area. The construction of the access road is necessary as we scale back vehicular access to Southwood Precinct. This road will be used only by our Physical Plant workers and our contracted maintenance supplier. This road is temporary and is not part of the future Southwood Precinct development plan. Maintenance of the Southwood precinct will respect the university’s sustainability model of best practices, using an Integrated Pest Management Program driven by education and research during this interim period.
Traffic Delays and Trasit Route Changes at Fort Garry Campus
The influx of students, faculty and staff for the new fall term, combined with continued roadwork at Chancellor Matheson and Pembina Highway, can be expected to congest traffic flow to and from the university.
The good news is that this roadwork will ultimately improve access to the Fort Garry campus; the bad news is that you should expect some delays in getting onto campus and leaving during peak hours while construction is underway.
Chancellor Matheson/Pembina Highway Intersection
This roadway project is expected to last until early November and involves the creation of additional turning lanes, new bus stops, sidewalks and multi-use pathways, and the installation of new traffic signals.
The City of Winnipeg advises that when work is not occurring, and provided it is safe to do so, barricades will be removed to allow traffic to use the closed westbound lanes.
Northbound, eastbound and westbound cutoffs are expected to reopen before the long weekend, weather permitting. Opening the cutoffs will permit larger vehicles to make right turns onto and off of Chancellor Matheson. It will also reduce congestion on westbound Chancellor Matheson, as right-turning traffic currently shares the through-lane at the signal.
Lane closures at the east end of Chancellor Matheson and southbound University Crescent (alongside the new stadium), which have been in effect to accommodate construction of the new stadium, will be reopened by the September long weekend.
Change to transit service on Maclean Crescent
As of September 3 there will no longer be bus service on Maclean Crescent. All Maclean Crescent bus stops will be relocated to Dafoe Road, north of Taché Hall.
Also please note that Maclean Crescent will become a two-way street.

New road closures

The City of Winnipeg will begin a major median construction and lane expansion project at the intersection of Chancellor Matheson and Pembina Highway starting Tuesday, August 2nd. There will be construction at all four corners of the intersection which will affect vehicle and pedestrian traffic in that area. This construction project is expected to last until early November.
The work will include the construction of double left turn lanes by widening both Pembina Highway and Chancellor Matheson Road. It will involve the construction of new driving lanes, asphalt replacement and new bus stops, sidewalks and multi-use pathways.
Since a number of lanes will be reduced, delays can be expected. However, accommodations will be made at high traffic periods (for example, early morning and late afternoon) to minimize delays as much as possible.
The new lane and median development will have long term benefits to the University. These benefits include:
• The creation of two multi-use pathways (shared pedestrian and cycling) connecting to the existing south side of the Chancellor Matheson Road pathway;
• The addition of a second left turn lane in the northbound, westbound and southbound directions that will reduce delays;
• New traffic signals and timing offering improved traffic flow;
• New overhead signs to improve wayfinding into the University.
There will also be increased safety features for pedestrians and cyclists with new sidewalks, detectable warning surfaces for visually impaired users, upgraded rail crossing equipment, safer island locations, and new bus stops, sidewalks and shelters.
Delays and traffic congestion in the area will be dramatically reduced. Wait times at lights will shorten. The development will also offset the anticipated increase in traffic congestion when the new stadium opens. By increasing road capacity at this main entranceway to the University traffic congestion overall will be minimized.

Please be advised of recent road closures on the Fort Garry campus.
The stadium project has closed down the west bound lane of Chancellor Matheson from University Crescent to the west limit of “U” lot or RH Way. The east bound lane currently has 2-way traffic for this portion of Chancellor Matheson only.
For pedestrian traffic crossing University Crescent at the stadium side, there is an accessible sidewalk to the median where a 5 foot pedestrian allowance parallel to the median (on the closed road) and down Chancellor Matheson to the west limit of the street closure. At that point there is also a flag person directing truck traffic into the construction site and pedestrians back to the existing sidewalk to the old stadium.

UPDATE: University Centre Revitalization Project
Over the holiday break, the entire main floor of University Centre
will be prepped for tile installation. The plywood flooring and
sleepers currently in place will be removed and donated to Habitat for
Humanity, after which concrete will be poured throughout and ready for
foot traffic by January 3. Floor tiles will then be installed in small
sections until the project is complete.
In order to accommodate the plywood removal and concrete pour, there
will be no access to the main floor of University Centre between
Thursday December 23 and Sunday January 2 inclusive.
Please note there will be major truck traffic on Chancellor Matheson and University Crescent due to stadium excavation.

UNIVERSITY CENTRE REVITALIZATION PROJECT
We are pleased to announce that the first floor of University Centre will be stripped and retiled this summer, with work to commence on Monday, July 19. In order to minimize disruptions and public access during this exciting project, the removal of existing tiles and mortar bed will be done outside of business hours. As well, staff and public access to retail businesses, food services and office spaces will not be impacted.

Pembina Hall will be closed Friday, June 11, 2010 until November 30, 2010 during the overhead construction work of the New Student Residence Building. Access will only be available to Physical Plant and Bird Construction. The PH residence office has moved over to the Arthur Mauro Residence and Aramark Food Services is now operating out of University Centre. 1. Pembina Hall Residence
360 unit residence to be completed September 2011. Steel deliveries commence end of May. Traffic disruption expected with steel deliveries along Freedman Crescent and Mclean Cresc until the end of November. 14 story steel framing completed by December. Pembina Hall closed from May until November.
2. 2. Art Lab
70,000 sq.ft. School of Art facility to be completed by December 2011. Alumni Lane closed during construction. Tier-Drake Tunnel closed until facility completion. Pedestrian surface access to Drake affected. Use South entrance or North-east entrance.
3. 3. Buller Lawn Area
Sewer redevelopment and old tunnel collapse work commences May 2010 through September 2010. Pedestrian access in and around Buller, Fitzjerald, University Centre will be affected. N lot will be closed May to September 2010. Re-landscaping and paving stone work to be undertaken fall 2010 and again in Summer 2011.
4. 4. New Football Stadium
35,000 seat football stadium commences site preparation in June 2010 with expected completion 2012. Traffic along Chancellor Matheson may be affected June to August 2010 during excavation of the bowl.
5. 5. Wallace Building
20,000 sq.ft. full floor addition to Wallace Building commences in and about June 2010 with completion May 2011. Traffic along Dysart will be most affected during craning of materials from May to September 2010.
