World-class research

For more than 140 years, research at UM has resulted in significant breakthroughs in medicine, agriculture, engineering, environmental science and numerous other fields. UM research's economic impact for 2022-23 was nearly $3 billion. Some major areas of focus include climate change and Arctic system science, health and well-being, social justice and human rights and Indigenous research.

Driving innovation and economic growth

UM contributes to innovation and economic growth through supporting ideas for business, social enterprise and community development or environmental change. Building on the success of the Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship at the Asper School of Business, IdeaStart will provide a central physical location offering one-on-one mentorship from faculty and business leaders in the community, as well as state-of-the-art technology, inviting work spaces, educational programs and more.

Sustainability stewards for a greener future

As a leader in sustainability and climate action, UM signed the Global University and Colleges Climate Letter in 2020, setting clear and aggressive climate action goals for 2050. In 2023, the Climate Action Plan was released, detailing the main focus areas of UM's climate efforts. We're all in for net zero, and we're actively making the necessary changes to get us there on time.

Indigenous engagement and academic excellence

The UM is home to a strong, vibrant and dynamic Indigenous community, with more than 2,600 students. UM offers a wealth of programs that support the success of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and help to develop leaders for all communities. Learn about how we are engaging with the Office of Vice-President (Indigenous), Elders and Knowledge Keepers across our campuses to support academic excellence and achievement.

Visitors

UM contributes to Manitoba’s tourism sector by attracting out-of-town visitors attending UM-hosted events. In 2022-23, UM hosted 83 events, with more than 26,000 registered attendees, half of which were from out of province. Spending per visit was estimated to be just over $480. The economic impact for visitor spending was estimated at $134.1 million. Students, faculty and visitors from our community and abroad can book spectacular spaces, take in arts and culture and engage in sports and recreation across our campuses.
