Funding and Awards

We are committed to supporting research and graduate student success.  Listed below are just a few of the many scholarship and bursary opportunities available to you while completing your graduate work at the University of Manitoba.

Internal Awards

University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGF)
Valued for a 12 month period at $16,000 for PhD students, or $12,000 for Master's students.
Please check with your department for details on how to be considered for a UMGF.

Departmental Awards
Many of our departments have internal awards based on academic merit, the values of which vary by department.
Please check with your department for details on how to be considered for these awards.

Research and Teaching Assistantships
Many of our departments engage students for help in conducting undergraduate classes and laboratories.  Opportunities for research assistantships also exist, and in many cases graduate students in the preparation of their theses may use the research undertaken.

External Awards

Manitoba Graduate Scholarships (MGS)
The Government of Manitoba has provided funds to ensure that Manitoba's best students continue education at home, to foster research that leads to economic growth and to attract excellent students to study in Manitoba.
Valued for a 12 month period at $7,500 for PhD students (can be held with the UMGF), or $15,000 for Master's students (must decline UMGF).
Students who are eligible for the UMGF will also have their name entered into the MGS Competition.

Tri-Council Awards
Values for awards from Canada's three major research granting agencies are in excess of $16,000 per year.

• Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)
• Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Manitoba Health Research Council (MHRC)
The MHRC provides funds for research in the health sciences through a number of grants and awards programs.
Students apply directly to the MHRC for funding.  Please check their website for instructions.

Need-Based Funding

Canadian Federal, Provincial and Territorial Government Loans/Bursaries
Application for these need-based loans/bursaries is made to the province or territory where the student is a considered a resident. Provincial rules vary, but, in general, students may use the loan to study at the university of their choice, in any province. These loans are guaranteed, interest free, and do not need to be repaid as long as the recipient is enrolled in a full-time course of study.
