Summer Residence Contract:

While the Student Residences Contract serves to identify the respective obligations and responsibilities of the resident and the University, its greater purpose is to ensure an acceptable living environment for all residents. The following sections describe the terms and conditions of the legally binding Contract between you and the University of Manitoba.

What are your summer residence rates?
Rates are different for Long-Term Lease Guests, Short-Term Guests, and Conferences & Groups. Please refer to our website for current rates:

 ► What building will I be living in?
If you are new to residence for the summer, we will assign you a room and building based on your room type request. If you are currently a student living in residence, you may be relocated to a new room for the summer time, depending on availability and room type request.

If you are a Conference or Group guest, the room assignment will have been arranged with the Conference Coordinator and the Conference Organizer.

When are the Residence Offices open in the summer?
The Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office, located at 120 Dafoe Road, will be open 7 days a week, from 8:00 AM - 12:00 AM (midnight). The second residence office, located in the lobby of University College Residence, has regular office hours of Monday – Friday 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.

Do you give tours of residence?
You can call our office at 204-474-9922 or Toll-free 1-800-859-8737 to arrange a tour. We try our best to accommodate your schedule; however, we require at least 24 hours notice in advance to make arrangements.

Where are the residences located on campus?
Arthur V. Mauro Residence is locate at 120 Dafoe Road and MacLean Crescent. Mary Speechly Hall is located at 26 MacLean Crescent. Pembina Hall Residence is at 30 MacLean Crescent, and University College Residence is on the north-east side of the campus at 220 Dysart Road. Please see the campus map.

What is the Check-in and Check-out time?
All guests should check in at the Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office front desk located at 120 Dafoe Road, University of Manitoba (Fort Garry Campus). We request guests plan to check in after 3:00 PM and check out by 10:00 AM. If you plan to arrive or leave apart from these hours you will need to make prior arrangements with us.

How can I pay for my stay?
Long-Term Lease Guests (over 30 nights) - can pay using Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card, Cash, Personal or Traveller’s Cheques (in Canadian funds only), Money Order, Bank Draft. Additionally, only the first month’s rent can be paid online through the residence portal. Subsequent payments are to be paid by the first of each month, and can be made in person, over the phone with a VISA or MASTERCARD, or mailed to the office with a cheque or money order. We do not accept bank wire transfers.

Short-Term Guests (less than 30 nights) - can pay using Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card, Cash, or Money Order in Canadian funds.

Conferences and Groups - can pay using Visa, MasterCard, Debit Card, Cash, or Money Order in Canadian funds. If a group staying on campus is organized through a University of Manitoba department, we do accept a FOAP.

When do I pay for my stay?
For Long-Term Lease Guests (over 30 nights) - the payment for your first month must accompany the Summer Residence Application. Subsequent payments are due on or before the 1st of the month and need to be paid in-person at the Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office. Late payments incur late charges.  Please note meal plans are not included in the Summer Contract.

Short-Term Guests (less than 30 nights) - will need to pre-pay before checking in.

Conferences and Groups - will be required to put down a down-payment to hold their rooms. After the conference has checked out of residence and all charges have been finalized, they will be sent a final bill/invoice.

For U of M students:

Residence charges, Including monthly lease payments and miscellaneous charge items will appear on a student's Aurora account and are due on the first day of each month of occupancy, regardless of summer enrollment status or posted summer tuition fee deadlines.  Fees must be paid in accordance with Financial Services' payment options.  For more information on payment options, please see:  http://umanitoba.ca/admin/financial services/rev cap/payment.html.

ICM or other summer guests must pay residence fees in-person at the Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office.

How can I cancel my application? If I want to leave earlier than I originally stated, do I get my money back?

For Long-Term Lease Guests (over 30 nights) - Contracts are based on calendar months (i.e., May, June, and July - without pro-rated amounts). Notice of cancellation of this contract must be received, in writing, no less than 30 days prior to your original requested arrival date. Failure to do so will result in the forfeiture (loss of) one month’s fees. No-shows will be charged the fee for one month. If, after you move into residence, you wish to move out earlier than your original requested check out date, notice must be submitted, in writing, at least one calendar month in advance (e.g., if you are planning to move out on June 30th, your notice must be submitted no later than June 1st). Failure to submit proper notice will result in a late fee of $150.

Short-Term Guests (less than 30 nights) - Written notice is required at least 48 hours in advance of your check-in date in order to cancel any or all of your reservation. If proper notice is not given, you will be charged for the first night of your reservation.

Is parking available?
Yes, parking is available. Please contact the Parking Services Office at 204-474-9483 or go to http://umanitoba.ca/campus/parking for information.

Conferences and Groups - Parking is included in the room rate for guests staying in Arthur V. Mauro Residence and Pembina Hall Residence. Mary Speechly Hall and University College Residence guests can purchase parking passes at the Reception Desk in the Arthur V. Mauro Residence.

How can I get around via bus, bike, and taxi?

  • Buses: Buses are operated by Winnipeg Transit, and the main university bus terminal is located on Dafoe Road. Bus schedules are posted at the bus stops and we have some pamphlets in the Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office foyer as well. For specific up-to-date schedules, rates and fares, please call: Winnipeg Transit Info Line 204-986-5700 or go online at http://www.winnipegtransit.com/index.jsp
  • Bicycles: Bikes can be placed in the bike rack in the front entrance of Mary Speechly Hall and the back entrance of the Arthur V. Mauro Residence. The Arthur V. Mauro Residence also has a Bike Room in the basement for Arthur V. Mauro Residence guests only. Please come to the office to pick up a key. Keys are $5 and are refundable upon their return.

Where can I get meals?
The Food Services office is located on 2nd floor Pembina Hall. For information about food venues on campus and their hours of operation, please call Food Services at 204-474-9916 or go online at: http://www.campusdish.com/en-us/CA/Manitoba.

What supplies do I need to bring - e.g., kitchenware, cleaning supplies/personal care items, linens, etc.?
If desired, all guests will need to provide their own:

  • Kitchenware, such as dishes, cutlery, pots, and pans.
  • Cleaning supplies and personal care items such as soaps, shampoo, dish detergent, hairdryers, etc.

Long-term guests (monthly rentals) - are required to bring their own linens, including bedding, towels, etc.
Short-term (nightly) stays
- will have linens, (including bedding, towels, etc.) provided to them.

Long-term stays - The Arthur V. Mauro Residence and the Pembina Hall Residence will have housekeeping services on a rotational schedule for the kitchen and bathroom areas only (about every 4-5 weeks).

Note: vacuums can be borrowed from the Front Office (when available).

Are your buildings and rooms handicap-accessible?
We have ramps leading into the buildings and elevators to go up to the floors. We also have five suites in the Arthur V. Mauro Residence that provide relatively better accessibility than other suites. If you have a disability and have special concerns, please contact our office prior to booking your stay to ensure we can accommodate you in the best way possible.

Are pets allowed?
Unfortunately, no pets are permitted.

Do I have television and Internet access in my room?
There are TVs in each of the lounges in the buildings, but not in the rooms. Wireless internet access is available in Arthur V. Mauro Residence, Mary Speechly Hall, Pembina Hall Residence and University College Residence at no extra charge.

Do the rooms have private washrooms?
Not in Mary Speechly Hall or University College Residence, although there are washrooms and individual shower stalls on each floor. However, the Arthur V. Mauro Residence does have a private washroom in each suite, complete with shower, which both suitemates would share. The Pembina Hall Residence has a private washroom and shower in each room.

What kind of keys will I have for my room?

  • Arthur V. Mauro Residence has a key card which opens the building entrances and the door to your suite.
  • Mary Speechly Hall guests will receive 2 different keys: an entrance key for the building and a room key.
  • Pembina Hall Residence uses electronic keys (fobs) that open the outside entrances and your room door.
  • Long-term guests will also be given a mailbox key.

If you lose your keys, please notify the Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office. If your keys are not found, there is a charge for lost keys and a lock change may have to be done at your expense.

Where are the telephones?
Arthur V. Mauro Residence has a courtesy house phone in the first floor front foyer. Guests in Mary Speechly Hall and Pembina Hall Residence can use the MTS payphones on the main floors of Mary Speechly Hall and Pembina Hall.

Where can I do my laundry?
You only have access to the laundry room in the building you are staying in. The Laundry Rooms are located in the basements of Mary Speechly Hall, University College Residence and Arthur V. Mauro Residence, and on the second floor of Pembina Hall Residence.

Guests can borrow a laundry card and only need to put money on the card, but must return it to the Residence Office before they leave. You will need to provide your own laundry detergent.

Are there any amenities like pool tables, etc.?
The basement of Arthur V. Mauro Residence has a Games Area with pool table and ping-pong table, as well as a Fitness Room equipped with two bikes, a treadmill, an elliptical trainer, and exercise mats. These amenities are accessible only to Arthur V. Mauro Residence Guests. Mary Speechly Hall has a Fitness Room on the main floor with two elliptical trainers, two exercise bikes, and two treadmills open to guests at Mary Speechly Hall and Pembina Hall Residence.

 ► Are there any vending machines?
Vending machines with snacks and drinks are located in the basement of the Arthur V. Mauro Residence building and on the first floor of the Pembina Hall building which is adjacent to Mary Speechly Hall.

Will someone come into my room to clean?
Short Stay and Conference Guests: Caretakers will come to clean your room/suites on a rotational basis; towels and bed linens are changed regularly. Garbage Rooms are located on each floor of the buildings with garbage and recycling bins.

Long-term stays: Arthur V. Mauro Residence and Pembina Hall Residence will have housekeeping services on a rotational schedule for the kitchen and bathroom areas only (about every 4-5 weeks).


Where is the Lost & Found?
If you find any lost and found item, you can bring it to the front desk of the Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office.

How do I get my mail?
Mail for residence is distributed into mailboxes by our office. Mailboxes are on the first floor of Arthur V. Mauro Residence. University College Residence mailboxes are located in the lobby of the building. For larger items we place a notice card in your mailbox alerting you come to the Residence Office to pick up your package. Please note: University College residents pick up packages from the University College Residence office; all other residents pick up packages from Arthur V. Mauro Residence Office.

Can I smoke in my room or somewhere in the building?
The University of Manitoba is a clean air campus. Residents cannot smoke anywhere inside the residence buildings or in any other building on campus. Smoking is permitted outdoors, only, away from buildings. Ashtrays are provided.

Can I have alcohol in the Residence?
Alcohol is permitted in accordance with the Manitoba Liquor Control Act and the University's Campus Alcohol Policy. Guests who drink must do so in a safe and responsible manner. Student Residences does not allow glass beer bottles in any of the buildings. Please see the summer contract for a more detailed Alcohol Policy.

How can people contact me in my room?
You must come to the lobby to receive your guests, as we do not open the inside residence doors for visitors. Mary Speechly Hall, Pembina Hall Residence, and University College Residence guests will need to arrange how to receive their visitors in advance, as there is no intercom system in the building nor any phones in the residence rooms.
