ABOVE: Diana Thorneycroft (Canadian, b. 1956), Rabbit (monstrance) (from the series Re/Monstrance ), 2000, charcoal on paper. Collection of Gallery One One One, School of Art, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Gift of the Artist. Acc. No.: 03.010

Diana Thorneycroft is a Winnipeg artist who teaches at the University of Manitoba School of Art. She was born in 1956 in Claresholm, Alberta. She received her B.F.A. Honours degree from the School of Art University of Manitoba in 1979 and her M.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980. She has since established an international reputation through exhibitions across Canada and the United States, and in galleries in Edinburgh, Helsinki, Moscow, Tokyo, Sydney, Vienna and Belgrade. Her work has been the subject of Canadian national radio documentaries and a CBC national documentary for television. She is the recipient of numerous awards including an Established Artist grant from the Canada Council, several Senior Arts Grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and a Fleck Fellowship from the Banff Centre for the Arts.

Rabbit (monstrance) is part of a suite of twelve charcoal drawings entitled Re/Monstrance, based on her controversial exhibition, Monstrance, held at the St. Norbert Arts Centre in the fall of 1999. In this series of drawings from 2000, Thorneycroft uses the rabbit as a surrogate to explore themes of human mortality, pain, suffering and violence. Thorneycroft's overarching religious theme makes reference to Christianity and the story of Christ, and questions the notion of the sacred.

This exhibition features key works by Eleanor Bond, Aganetha Dyck, Wanda Koop and Diana Thorneycroft from the collection of Gallery One One One, recently acquired through the efforts of the Co-chairs of Gallery One One One's Collections Committee, professor Oliver Botar and gallerist Robert Epp. Within the context of a rapidly expanding Winnipeg art scene, Eleanor Bond, Aganetha Dyck, Wanda Koop and Diana Thorneycroft continue to be key players. Included are large-scale paintings by Koop, from her Sightlines series, and from Bond's Social Centres project, an excerpt from an installation by Dyck, Inter Species Communication Attempt, based on her collaboration with bees, and a charcoal drawing by Thorneycroft inspired by her Monstrance exhibition.
