Medical Research Gains
Crocus Investment
Two medical researchers, Alan Mutch and Gerry Lefevre, both of the department
of anesthesia, have made discoveries that could lead to two new products to
assist in the management of patients undergoing cardiac surgery or surgery
following severe lung injury.
The biotechnology products will be commercialized and marketed by a
new company, BioVar Life Support Inc., owned jointly by the two researchers,
the University of Manitoba, and the Crocus Investment Fund, which
invested $500,000. The Crocus Fund provides capital to Manitoba-owned
businesses, and has targeted biotechnology as a growth industry in the province.
This is the first time the U of M has held equity in a company created as a
direct result of research conducted at the university. The university can
expect substantial economic benefits as the BioVar products are further developed
and marketed.
