Medical Research Council Recognizes Outstanding Scientists

James Davie, biochemistry and molecular biology, received a five-year Medical Research Council Senior Scientist Award, which contributes to the salary of scientists of exceptional merit who are leaders in their field. Davie is one of only 12 such award holders in Canada and one of seven awarded in 1997-98; Frank Plummer of internal medicine also received one in 1996-97.

Other awards received this year were:

  • Cam Mustard, community health sciences, and Avindra Nath, internal medicine, received five-year awards as MRC Scientists. The U of M received two of the 12 Scientist awards.
  • Peter Nickerson (internal medicine), Steven Pind (biochemistry & molecular biology), Guangming Zhong (medical microbiology), received five-year MRC Scholarships. The U of M received three of the 22 awards available nationally in this category.
