Flood of the Century Brings
Out Best from U of M
The "flood of the century" in the Red River Valley in spring, 1997, brought
out the best from the University of Manitoba. The specialized knowledge and skills
of the U of M staff and students were applied to the flood and its
consequences. In addition to individuals sandbagging,
the university residences were open to evacuees from communities
throughout the valley, and the university's web
site designers dedicated themselves to providing outstanding information
and links about the flood to people around the world. Researchers also provided
expertise before and during the flood, in such
areas as engineering, history, geography, and agricultural and social sciences.
As well, U of M researchers organized an interdisciplinary flood research
network called FLOODNET, which sponsored an international research workshop
in September, 1997 on flood-related issues. The conference was attended by
more than 100 delegates from Ontario,
Québec, Saskatchewan, British Columbia,
Alberta, North Dakota and Minnesota. Topics discussed included flood management
(i.e. preparedness, mitigation and recovery) in the pre-emergency, emergency and
post-emergency phases; flood prediction; and the impact of the flood on
people, structures, infrastructure, the
environment and the economy. The university's researchers will help ensure an
even higher level of responsiveness to future floods.
