BW Fallis Parkinson’s Care Research Grant

Purpose

The B.W. Fallis Parkinson’s Care Research Grant provides funding for both qualitative and/or quantitative research examining the physical and/or psychosocial aspects of Parkinson’s disease (PD). This includes but is not limited to projects aimed at improving quality of life and care for persons living with Parkinson’s and/or their families; examining ethical issues that arise during the care of people living with PD, increasing our understanding and treatment of non-motor and motor symptoms of PD; addressing issues related to family caregiving, and facilitating access to services and supports for people living with PD and their families. Research can focus on any phase of the illness trajectory of PD from early diagnosis to end-of-life care. Biomedical and/or bench research in PD is not eligible for this funding opportunity. There is one (1) award of $4,500 available for funding. Our thanks to the B.W. Fallis Parkinson’s Care Research Grant for providing funding.

Eligibility criteria

  • Research must focus on PD, including improving quality of life and care, examining ethical issues, understanding, and treating symptoms, addressing family caregiving, and facilitating access to services and supports. Biomedical or bench research is not eligible.
  • The Principal Investigator must hold one or more of the following appointments:
    • Research, professional or graduate student affiliate of the MCNHR and/or
    • Primary salaried academic appointment in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.
    • A current graduate student in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba whose supervisor holds a primary academic appointment in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.

In cases where there is a tie in score for the highest ranked application, preference will be given to applications that are from a nurse (be it a graduate nursing student, nursing faculty member or nurse in practice).

Funding guidelines

1. Start date of project

  • Research projects must be ready to start within three (3) months of receiving the grant. Thus, approval of the research proposal by an appropriate University of Manitoba Research Ethics and or Animal/Biosafety Board and related approval certificates must be obtained three (3) months prior to the grant start date. See first item under Grant Administration.

2. Budget information

  • Funding to a maximum of $4,500 will be provided over a two (2)-year period. Applications requesting more than $4,500 will not be considered.
  • Funding is to cover direct research costs only, which may include personnel, equipment, supplies, travel for data collection purposes, and travel to one conference (up to a maximum of $1,000). Any equipment purchased is the property of the College of Nursing, University of Manitoba. No portion of the grant is to be used as salary for the principal investigator or graduate student (if applicable). Requests that are solely for the purpose of knowledge translation/mobilization activities (i.e., conference travel, open access publishing, development of knowledge translation products etc.) are not eligible.
  • Requests for full funding of a project will be given higher priority than requests for partial funding. If requests are for partial funding, the applicant must explain their plans to secure additional funding to ensure the projects will be successfully implemented.

3. Grant administration

  • Receipt of funds is conditional upon approval of the research proposal by an appropriate University of Manitoba Research Ethics and or Animal/Biosafety Board. Ethics (and/or animal /biosafety) approval certificates must be obtained within three (3) months of the award start date, or the grant will be forfeited. A three (3)-month extension of this requirement will only be provided if applicant(s) have submitted their ethics (and/or animal/biosafety) application and are awaiting approval. Exceptions will only be made to this guideline in cases where ethics approval is not required for the project (i.e., when the proposed project activities does not involve any of the following: human participants, stem cells, animal, or biological samples) or in the case of exceptional extenuating circumstances to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. If applicants are unable to obtain ethics approval within the timeframes mentioned above, they will be required to forfeit the funding.
  • Grant funds will be administered by the University of Manitoba. For applicants who do not hold salaried professorial rank appointments at the University of Manitoba, the Associate Dean Research, College of Nursing, will have signing authority over the grant.
  • Research grants must be used for the project and purposes described in the application. Grant-holders wanting to transfer funds from one budget category to another in response to changing research needs or to use funds for a new budget item must secure the prior written approval of the MCNHR.
  • The Principal Investigator may replace, add, remove, or promote individuals/team members on existing grants, provided that the rationale for replacing, adding, removing, or promoting individuals has been deemed justifiable by the MCNHR. If you are adding or promoting team members, please provide a brief explanation of their expertise and proposed contributions to the project.
  • If, at the end of two (2) years, the funds are not expended and the project is not completed, consideration will be given to the applicant’s request to extend the termination date for one (1) additional year. A request for extension of the grant must be made to the Associate Dean Research, College of Nursing, at least one (1) month prior to expiry of the grant. If funds are not expended or the project is terminated, all remaining funds must be returned to the MCNHR.

4. End of grant activities

  • A final project report must be provided to the MCNHR at the end of the grant term.
  • Publications and presentations arising out of the research must acknowledge the funding support of the B.W. Fallis Parkinson’s Care Research Grant as per their award letter.

Application process

Open Access Publishing Fund - Graduate Nursing Students

Purpose

The College of Nursing Endowment Fund has allocated $10,000 for a Faculty Open Access Publishing Fund to support the costs of faculty publishing in open access journals. Applications will be considered on a first come first served basis, until yearly funds have been depleted or until March 15, whichever comes first.

Eligibility criteria

  • All College of Nursing faculty (tenured, tenure track and instructor rank) are eligible to apply to the Open Access Fund to cover the full costs of publishing an article in an open access journal as a first author. Note: nil-salary, adjunct professors, and research/professional affiliates outside the College of Nursing are not eligible to apply for open access funds.
  • A graduate student authored publication is not eligible for funding under this fund but is eligible for funding under the Graduate Student Open Access Publishing Fund.
  • Only publications which have been accepted for publishing in open access journals will be considered. Publication(s) under review will not be considered for funding until they are accepted for publication. Sometimes, a journal may invite authors who have previously published a non-open access paper to pay a fee to have it converted to an open access publication. Due to limited funding available: already published papers (both those that are non-open access and those that are published as open access) are not eligible for support through this fund.
  • A College of Nursing faculty member is only eligible to receive funding for one (1) publication per fiscal year.

Priorities in funding

  • Priority for funding will be for faculty who are first time applicants to the fund (i.e., applicants who have not received funding in the current fiscal year or previous years)
  • Priority for funding will also be for faculty who do not have access to any other source of funding to cover all or a portion of the open access costs (such as operating grants, start-up funds, salary awards)

Application process

Applications for open access publishing funds will be submitted using the online MCNHR service request form with appended supporting documents:

  • Notification of acceptance for publication
  • List of authors and affiliations
  • A quote for open access cost

All applicants will receive an email from the MCNHR regarding the outcome of their request for open access funding. Successful applicants will be provided with information about whom to contact in the CON regarding processes regarding paying the journal open access fee cost. When possible, successful applicants should acknowledge the Open Access Funding support from the College of Nursing Endowment Fund, as per the email communication, in the funding section of their publication. We recognize that acknowledgement of open access funding is not always possible if final proofs of the manuscript have already been submitted to the journal and no revisions are allowed by the publishers.

Submit your request for Open Access Funding Support through the online submission portal.

Research must focus on PD, including improving quality of life and care, examining ethical issues, understanding, and treating symptoms, addressing family caregiving, and facilitating access to services and supports. Biomedical or bench research is not eligible.

The Principal Investigator must hold one or more of the following appointments:

  • Research, professional or graduate student affiliate of the MCNHR and/or
  • Primary salaried academic appointment in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba.
  • A current graduate student in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba whose supervisor holds a primary academic appointment in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.
  • Projects related to graduate student thesis or dissertation research are eligible, but the principal applicant must be the academic supervisor who holds a primary academic appointment with the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and the supervisor will have signing authority over grant funds.
  • Have submitted the highest-rated grant proposal for research related to Parkinson’s care, as determined by the MCNHR Research Grant Review Committee.

Research projects must be ready to start within three (3) months of receiving the grant. Thus, approval of the research proposal by an appropriate University of Manitoba Research Ethics and or Animal/Biosafety Board and related approval certificates must be obtained three (3) months prior to the grant start date. See first item under Grant Administration.

2. Budget information

  • Funding to a maximum of $3,000 will be provided over a two (2)-year period. Applications requesting more than $7,500 will not be considered.

If funds are not expended or the project is terminated, all remaining funds must be returned to the Fort Garry Branch Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund.

4. End of grant activities

  • A final project summary report must be provided to the MCNHR at the end of the grant term.
  • Publications and presentations arising out of the research must acknowledge the funding support of the Fort Garry Branch Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Trust Fund as per their award letter.

Application process

1. Research proposal

Provide a description of the project, not to exceed five (5) typewritten, single-spaced pages (excluding appendices and references). Applicants must use 12-point font and a minimum 2-cm margin around all attached documents.

It is recommended that applicants use the following headings in their five (5)-page research proposal:

  • Rationale and background for the study
  • Purpose/objectives
  • Literature review
  • Conceptual framework (if applicable)
  • Methods (Research design, site and sample selection, study procedures, data analysis plan)
  • Challenges and mitigation strategies
  • Knowledge translation/mobilization plan
  • Timeframe and feasibility (including the probability of securing ethics approval within three (3) months of receipt of funding
  • Team member(s) relevant research experience and contributions
  • Significance of the project
  • Relevance/fit to enhancing care of veterans, their families, or older adults in Manitoba
    • For faculty/research affiliates:
    • Fit of the project within the applicant’s program of research Plans for future funding

2. References

Applicants must use numbered referencing/citation style (e.g., Vancouver referencing or National Library of Medicine citation style). References are not included in the five (5) page limit of the research proposal.

3. Budget justification and explanation section

Provide a clear and detailed justification for each budget item and relate it to the objectives and requirements of the proposed research (maximum two (2) pages). Please ensure this information is comprehensive and accurate. Please consult the MCNHR for current rates for research personnel. MCNHR will not provide additional funding for costs incurred above what is outlined in your budget.

4. Equity, Diversity and inclusion (EDI) and sex and gender based analysis (SGBA) considerations (optional)

Please explain how EDI and SGBA considerations, if applicable, have been integrated into the project (maximum ½ page). Please note this ½ page is in addition to the five-page proposal.

Note: The MCNHR encourages applicants to integrate EDI and SGBA considerations into their projects. However, the integration of EDI and SGBA considerations in aspects such as the project’s research design, data analysis and knowledge translation/mobilization plan, are not mandatory components and will not be a formal evaluation criterion that will impact the applicant’s chances of success. Rather, this new requirement is in line with the Tri-Agency EDI Action Plan for 2018-2025, which highlights initiatives Canada’s federal funding agencies have undertaken to foster a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive research ecosystem in Canada. In addition, the new requirement is meant to help facilitate discussions in research teams in the CON and beyond to build capacity to address and integrate SGBA and EDI considerations meaningfully in research.

Funding opportunities

Open Access Publishing Fund - Faculty
