Answers

Admissions

1. Where can I find information regarding Graduate Admissions?

Information regarding Graduate Admission can be found in the Academic Guide section of the Graduate Calendar. This is general Admissions information. For specific Admission information, you should refer to the departmental listing in the Graduate Calendar since requirements and procedures may be different for each program. Graduate Admission information can also be found on our website at: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/
You should contact the department to which you are applying for any further admission information.

2. How do I apply to the Faculty of Graduate Studies?

Applications for Admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies are available inthe FGS office, 500 University Centre. Admission forms are also available on-line through department websites. You need to contact the department to which you wish to apply for their specific admission requirements, including documentation and their application deadlines. A completed official application for admission form must be submitted, together with the application fee and supporting documentation, to the department to which you are applying.

3. Do I need a TOEFL (English Language Proficiency Test) score as part of my application?

A Successfully completed English Language Proficiency Test is required of all applicants unless they have received a high school diploma or university degree from Canada or one of the countries listed on the English Language Proficiency Test Exemption List. This list can be found on-line:
http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/admissions/english_exemption_list.htm

4. How and where do I submit official transcripts, etc. in support of my application for admission?

Official transcripts are submitted to the department where the application is being sent. These transcripts must arrive directly from the issuing university in a sealed and officially endorsed envelope. In cases where the transcript does/will not state that a degree has been conferred, an official degree certificate is required to accompany the transcript.

5. Does FGS require a GRE?

Some individual departments require admissions test such as the GRE. These requirements are listed in the Supplementary Regulations of the particular department, and if required, the scores must be submitted at the time of application.

Registration

1. How do I register for my Graduate Program?

Registration for most programs can be done by telephone or by web, while other programs students may register by mail or in person. Some departments may choose to register you themselves. This ensures that you are registering properly for your specific program. Some departments will put blocks on their students and register them themselves, others will put blocks on their students, approve their course load and then have the students register themselves, and yet, others will simply allow the students to register themselves without the block. Overall, you should be in contact with your department every year to go over your course work for that year. At that time, the department should indicate how they would like you to register.

2. Where do I get my hard copies of the Graduate Calendar and Registration Guide?

The Graduate Calendar and Registration Guide are distributed through the Student Records Office. Student Records mail the Calendar and Registration Guide to any new University of Manitoba students with a Canadian address. Students who receive their admission letter after August 15th will not be mailed a calendar. These, and all other students are required to pick up their copies themselves on campus (generally the new books are available in early April) or to arrange an alternative with Student Records.

Fees

1. What will my fees be?

The FGS office does not set, assess or collect fees. Fees are assessed through the Student Record’s Office and collected through the Cashier’s Office. Although FGS can reply to general concerns/questions regarding fees, it is best to speak directly to the office concerned.

This site allows you to search available awards and scholarships alphabetically or by keyword. You may also contact FGS Awards Officer and Awards Assistant with any questions you may have.
