CHARACTER OF THE JOB

The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including construction, renovations, provision of utility services, and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under general supervision, the Senior Locksmith is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of lock systems and related hydraulic door closers and panic hardware, provision of subordinate staff, estimating time and material requirements for jobs and maintaining records as may be requested by the supervisor.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervises locksmith and helpers.
  • Submits to supervisor daily work records, completed work orders, daily absenteeism and records of his/her work force.
  • Assists the supervisor and office personnel in maintaining a central file of all locks in the University with their key code.
  • Organizes and implements new locking systems for new construction and renovation projects.
  • Estimates time and material required for specific jobs.
  • Provides various lock changes, sets of sub-master keys, etc., in existing buildings.
  • Provides yearly re-pinning of all locks with heavy usage.
  • Pins all newly installed locks in new buildings for grand master, master, sub-master and basic keys.
  • Provides maintenance on locks, (such as re-pinning) when keys do not effectively open locks.
  • Open locks if keys are lost.
  • Cuts keys from individual lock code as requested.
  • Install lock and door checks.
  • Installation and repair of all toilet partitions and hardware.
  • Installation of new wood and metal doors complete with all types of hardware and weather stripping.
  • Repair of all existing wood and metal doors and hardware.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Education to an acceptable level with completion of appropriate courses in locksmithing.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License.

Experience

  • At least ten years of related experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others including the allocation of work.
  • Must adhere to all safety standards as established by the Physical Plant Department.
  • Should be well organized and able to prioritize work.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.

  • Capable of performing the duties as assigned.
