CHARACTER OF THE JOB
Dental Assistant 2s provide chairside assistance to dental students and professors, including organizing the daily routines of a specialized area, following established policies. Provision of reception and/or clerical record-keeping duties are a requirement of this level. Employees at this level are expected to perform intra-oral procedures under general supervision.
The work of these positions is governed by standard practice and well-defined guidelines and involve assisting in the introductory training of new employees hired to positions of the same and lower levels. Employees at this level normally work under general supervision. Supervision of other employees may be required at this level.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs any duties performed by Dental Assistant 1s as required to support the activities of the clinic.
- Performs the following intra-oral procedures in assistance of students and professional staff: putting in rubber dams, taking and developing x-rays, removing sutures, applying topical anesthetic and desensitizing teeth.
- Provides chairside assistance to students and professional staff in specialty and off-campus clinics, including assisting in surgical procedures and working with medically and physically challenged patients.
- Supervises the activities of the Main Clinic Dispensary, Central Sterilization and specialty clinics, including ordering and maintaining supplies and supervising the work of other staff working in those areas.
- Participates in interviewing and undertakes training of new staff.
- Participates in preparation, presentation and demonstration of the operation and maintenance of dental units, infection control policy and procedures and care and handling of supplies to new students.
- Takes photographs and cephalometric radiographs as required.
- Sets up and assists with intravenous sedation sessions.
- Following established procedures, performs administrative duties arising from needle stick injuries.
- Provides reception duties as required, including scheduling appointments, preparing pre-authorization forms and estimates, creating or obtaining and completing patient charts and records, completing requisitions and answering patient inquiries.
- Maintains records of fees charged using the MDA or DVA guide. Prepares dental claim forms and follows up on outstanding accounts.
- Provides daily and monthly report of clinic activities.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:
Level of Formal Education
Successful completion of a recognized Phase II Dental Assisting/ Chairside course, including the advanced module.
- One year of related experience in a dental office.
- Experience with dental billing.
- Some positions require successful experience working with patients with economic, physical and mental disabilities.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work well with students, staff and the general public.
- Ability to direct the work of others.
- Some positions require a current Manitoba driver = s license or the ability to travel outside the city of Winnipeg for extended periods.
- Physically capable of performing the duties as assigned, which include working in awkward positions and sitting and standing for periods of up to three hours.
Other Job-Related Qualifications
- Satisfactory work record, including attendance and punctuality.
- Current CPR course.
- Formal WHMIS training preferred.
- Fluency in an Aboriginal language is an asset for some positions.
