Learn how strategies acquired in video games can be applied to the physical activities you play throughout the day.     Advanced Climbing Skills

    (Ages 10-15)

    Advanced Climbing Skills is designed to help climbers with experience on the wall continue to develop their skills. The focus of this program will be on intermediate to advanced techniques while teaching you what it takes to train for a competition. Participants will be encouraged to set long-term goals for themselves and they will learn strategies for achieving their goals.

    All members of the climbing team will receive 10 passes for open climb time. Parental supervision is required during open climb times.

    Prerequisite: Wall Climbing - Fundamentals/Skills Advancement or equivalent.

    (Ages 8-11)

    In a recreational environment, through daily drills, scrimmages and game play, participants will develop their shooting, passing, dribbling, serving, and rallying skills while building agility and endurance. Instruction will focus on the fundamentals of badminton and basketball and incorporate the opportunity to learn new organizational and team-building skills. All equipment will be provided but you may also bring your own.

    NEW - Ball Hockey

    (Ages 8 - 11)

    Looking for hockey but not ready to lace up the skates just yet? This program is designed with you in mind. With more of a recreational mindset than our traditional hockey programs, come showcase your skills while working on you shot, passing, conditioning, and stickhandling through a variety of drills and scrimmages off campus on an paved, indoor hockey arena. Participants are required to bring their own CSA approved helmets, hockey gloves and stick.

    Bring it on Broadway (Two Week Camp)

    (Ages 8-11)

    Step onto the big stage if you have a flair for the performing arts! Learn about melodies, harmonies, acting and choreography. Discover how our bodies work to create sound and expression. Show off your talent during a group performance at the University of Manitoba’s very own John J. Conklin Theatre. Vocal experience is not required but participants must be excited about singing and performing.

    Keep active with us this summer while visiting some of Winnipeg’s fun and exciting destinations. You’ll experience four outings throughout the week which may include activities such as laser tag, a ninja and parkour gym, fun park amusement center and more! While on campus at Mini U, you will be participating in various recreational activities as well as a team-building activity that will have you competing in challenges across campus. More specific information regarding your outings will be sent out the week prior to your camp starting.

    Come and learn from the best in this goalie-focused camp that will be sure to have you stopping shots all year long. This camp features specialized goaltending instruction which allows for enhanced skill development and execution of all goaltending styles. You will also learn how to mentally prepare for competitive situations.

    Goalie Training Camp

    Come learn from the best in this goalie-focused camp that’ll be sure to have you stopping shots all year long. Learn about net positioning and  movement, puck control, rebound control and stick use. Minimum of one year playing experience required.

    Golf

    This summer, learn from a certified PGA golf professional! Learn the basics of the game on the golf course and the driving range while having fun along the way. Throughout the week receive instruction at St. Vital Golf Centre and then put your skills to work at Maplewood Golf Course. Receive a video analysis and print out of your swing to help maximize your shots off the tee box, your fairway shots and your chipping and putting.

    Participants must supply their own set of clubs and golf balls.

    (Ages 8-11)

    You will get instruction in wrist shots, backhands, snap shots as well as an introduction to slap shots to get you ready for your upcoming season. Time will also be spent on creating offensive and defensive opportunities, rushing the net and deking. Fifteen minutes of each ice time session will be spent on skating drills to improve conditioning.

    Jr. NBA Youth Basketball is designed to provide young athletes with fun, high-quality, and developmentally appropriate basketball training, programming, and coaching as part of a holistic approach to long-term athlete development.

    All participants will receive an NBA team reversible jersey featuring one of six NBA teams, basketball, drawstring bag, poster and certificate of participation.

    Learn about famous designers and innovators, their approaches and inspirations and how the built world comes together. Witness 3D printing and laser cutting firsthand in the Architecture FABLab. Take part in design exercises and learn how to create your own unique structures with custom parts cut by a laser cutter! Participants will take home two objects that they have assembled and created themselves.

    Join a program designed for the intermediate or experienced Bison who can skate with confidence, has a good understanding of the rules of hockey, and a good foundation in shooting, passing and stick handling. Participants must have at least two years of experience playing on a hockey team. Learn about conditioning, agility training, positioning, shooting and scoring, stick handling, passing, offensive and defensive strategies, teamwork and fair play. Experience fun off-ice exercises and training, paired with tips about healthy living.

    Learn to become a leader in the kitchen! Better understand kitchen safety, techniques for proper food handling, how to follow a recipe and more! Transform healthy ingredients into delicious snacks, baked goods and savoury meals. Participants will be assembling a recipe book that can be taken home at the end of the week. Our menu for the week will be set prior to your first day of camp. All recipes prepared will be nut-free.     With instruction provided by Mini U staff, this program is ideal for beginner hockey players, ringette players and recreational ice skaters. Lessons will focus on the fundamentals of skating: forward skating, stopping, starting, turning and backwards skating. Learn to Skate combines movement-oriented activities and games to encourage fun through learning.

    Children must be able to stand independently on the ice without assistance.

    CSA-approved helmets are required.

    The parent or adult accompanying the child should be a confident skater.

You’ll also learn how to pitch an idea just like the Dragons do! You’ll also get hands on practice with scenarios using interactive business games.

    If you have a passion for the great outdoors then this camp is for you! Spend the week visiting various green spaces such as La Barriere Park, Kings Park and Birds Hill Provincial Park. Learn about wilderness survival and basic orienteering. Try geocaching as well as wall climbing at the U of M Active Living Centre, all while learning leadership skills involving teamwork, communication and responsibility.

    We have the goalies – now we need someone to take the shots! Practice your wrist shot, backhand, snap shot and slap shots on our Goalie Training group to help give you that extra edge this season. Players can use this ice time to work on their individual skills through various shooting drills with our goalie group.

    Please note that proper shot instruction will not be provided during this session.

    Stop Motion Animation

    (Ages 8-11)

    Unleash your inner Spielberg at The Director’s Cut this summer. Using Lego and clay, you and your small film crew will create your own story lines, design sets and characters and use the latest cutting edge digital equipment and gear to shoot and edit your original stop motion short. During post production, you will add special effects, music, sound effects and titles. Materials, equipment and professional facilitation are all included in this blockbuster experience. Family and friends will enjoy a red carpet film festival on Friday afternoon and participants will be able to view and download their film from our online portal.

    SUP and Water Sports

    (Age 8-11)

    If you have a love for water and adventure, pack your bathing suit and let’s go! Join us for a full week of exciting water sports that take place on and off campus. Experience a variety of water based activities such as stand up paddling, kayaking, canoeing and inner tube water polo in a fun and safe environment.

    Tennis

    (Age 8-11)

    Enjoy tennis and hone your skills on our outdoor courts on campus. Tennis instruction will focus on the fundamentals with an emphasis on stroke development, proper footwork, serving, doubles and singles strategies. Racquets are provided but you may also bring your own.

    Track and Field

    (Ages 8-11)

    Step into the blocks and sprint to the finish line! Develop your skills as you explore all the events of track and field. Learn about running, jumping and throwing in an active and games-oriented environment. Take part in a mock track meet at the end of the week to test out your new skills.

    Wall Climbing – Introduction

    (Ages 7-9)

    This program is designed to give participants the chance to experience wall climbing for the first time. Under the supervision of our certified leaders, you will learn the basic requirements for wall climbing such as safety, communication and technique.

    Wall Climbing

    (Ages 8-11)

    Tackle a 1,500-square-foot climbing facility located in the Active Living Centre. It’s 50 feet long and 40 feet high! Learn safety procedures, knot-tying techniques, bouldering and climbing communication in a fun and safe indoor environment.

    Offered: Spring Break camps, summer

    (Ages 10-15)

    You will learn about the fundamentals of wall climbing such as safety, rope work, communication skills and belaying.  Come out and have fun learning as certified leaders teach you to climb to new heights.

    Inservice Days

    (Ages 5-15)

    Mini U Programs offers a great day of activities on a variety of school inservice days. 

    Bring your children here and let them spend the day doing archery, racquetball and more! Programs run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with drop-off from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m. and pick-up from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. NEW! Pick up/Drop off for Inservice Days will be in the James Daly (Max Bell) Fieldhouse. Let the summer fun continue! 

    Prices for the day are $33 per child. Registration is available online or you can also fax them to 204-474-7503 (attention: Drew) or dropped off in person at the Active Living Centre front desk.
