Dr. Usha Mittoo is the Stuart Clark Professor of Financial Management at the Asper School of Business. She received her Ph.D. (Finance) from the University of British Columbia, M.B.A. from the University of Manitoba, and joined the Faculty of Management in 1988. From 2000 to 2012, she held the Bank of Montreal Professorship in Finance, and from 1996 to 1998, served as Associate Dean responsible for the Asper School’s AACSB accreditation. Prior to joining Asper, she served in the Indian Administrative Service and was awarded the gold medal in her batch.
Dr. Mittoo has taught a variety of finance courses at the Ph.D., MBA, and undergraduate levels and in the Executive Development programs. She has received several awards for her teaching, research and service, including three CMA merit award for excellence in teaching and research, two Associates Achievement awards for excellence in research, and the 2011 Associates Achievement award, the 2010 University Merit Award, and the CGA Meritorious Award in service.
Dr. Mittoo is internationally known for her work in foreign listings, and international corporate finance. She has published papers in top academic journals, including Journal of Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance, Financial Management, and European Financial Management, and in practitioner journals, Journal of Applied Corporate Finance and Canadian Investment Review. She has received several awards and recognitions for her papers, including the Daeyang prize for the best paper and her work is widely cited. Her Journal of Finance (1992) paper on the Canada-US market integration, and Journal of Financial Management and Accounting (1992) paper on the net benefits of U.S. cross-listings have over 300 citations in academic papers, and her Financial Management (2004) paper on cross-country determinants of capital structure (with Franck Bancel, ESCP Europe) has over 425 citations (http://www.scholar.google.com). Her research is also cited in several practitioner journals, and in Canadian text books, including in Investments by Bodie, Kane, Marcus, Perrakis and Ryan; International Financial Management–Canadian Perspective, by Eun, Resnik, and Brean; and Corporate Finance by Ross Westerfield, Jaffee, and Roberts.
Dr. Mittoo’s current research focuses on financial regulation and the impact of the 2008 global financial crisis on corporate decisions. She was the editor of the 2011 special issue of International Journal of Managerial Finance on “Rethinking International Finance” and serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Multinational Finance Journal, International Journal of Managerial Finance, Qualitative Research in Financial Markets and as an Action Editor for Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences. She is on the Permanent Scientific Committee of the World Finance conference, has twice co-chaired the Northern Finance Association meetings (1998, 2010), and is a member of the Special Regulatory Committee of the ICE Futures Canada (previously Winnipeg Commodity Exchange) since 2004.
