Jim Sykes is a professional engineer who learned from Mold Makers the reality and implications that tolerances and surface finish specifications impart on machining processes. That knowledge base evolved while working on production and field service engineering, product development and design, project management and process-development, -improvement and -implementation in the precision-tooling mold industry. He gained further experience that allowed him to view engineering at both the system and component levels. Jim led the simultaneous implementation of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) in four business units on three global business campuses, guided a corporate-wide standardization of GD&T, and has taught GD&T to industry for over ten years. Jim is named as inventor on several patents, has published articles in corporate and industry trade magazines, and has authored industry publications and presentations.  Jim’s broader industry exposure started with his ten-year participation in the International Society of Beverage Technologists and the Closure Manufacturers’ Association. Jim has, or is now participating with ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) on the development and revision of various engineering standards, including Y14.3 - Orthographic and Pictorial Views, Y14.5 - Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, Y14.41 - Digital Product Definition Data Practices, and Y14.46 - Additive Manufacturing.

As an engineer-in-residence, Jim Sykes:

  • Teaches MECH 4322-T04 Advanced Graphical Communications
  • Serves as a technical advisor for the Mechanical Engineering capstone design course, MECH 4860 Engineering Design. 
  • Advises student design competition teams.
