(s) beauty and generosity | Atmos 2015 Emergence

We work to enable others to live with beauty. And in education we work to help students see beauty. Is beauty in a state of emergence? We believe that beauty is an essential component in the production of nature, and in the conversations, interpretations and physical manipulations of a living world. We sustain what we love and what we cherish. We sustain what we value. Beauty and value are wrapped up in shifting socio-ecological bundles. Generosity is itself emergent, realized through creative acts of connecting with others. The creation of beauty implies generosity, as beauty is realized through empathy for (or with?) others.

“Beauty saves as much as science does; it is as objective as science. I don’t know which life is a greater failure, the one lacking beauty or the one lacking science. Have you noticed the instructive parallel between ugliness and sterility? Even fecundity or the art of invention cannot do without beauty.” [9]

In this session we invite authors to think about the emergent potentials of beauty and the emergent nature of generosity. What are the affects of beauty, how does beauty change the world? How do designers regain a better sense of the world, how does design thinking enable the potentials of generosity.
