call for papers  | Atmos 2015 Emergence

Emergence is the theme for the seventh atmosphere symposium in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba. Atmosphere and emergence are fleeting phenomena in our everyday lives that we drift in and out of awareness toward. Do we need to talk of these ideas or are they implicit within our thinking when designing the environments we dwell within? Is emergence related to the atmosphere of place? Does atmosphere emerge or is it static? Is there a radical dependency (Bernstein, J. 2011) of one to the other? How does an emergent climatic atmosphere influence atmosphere of place? Can we design for emergent conditions? If we think of the emergence that is readily experienced in the spring with dormant vegetation budding to life, do we relate this to spatial conditions or is it more of a psychological affirmation of life? How do these ideas relate to environmental design, architecture, city planning, interior design and landscape architecture? The multiplicity of thoughts generated by individuals within these disciplines will enrich an understanding of emergence and the continual creativity of the systems that network to create our environments.

We invite PAPER PROPOSALS for 20-minute presentations exploring one of the following six sub-themes: Theories of emergence; Human / non-human intersections;  Designing emergence; Emergent situations and affects; Deliberately unstable; Beauty and generosity. Proposals should be well grounded in historical, theoretical or creative research, and develop compelling arguments and insights that contribute to interdisciplinary knowledge.

PLEASE SUBMIT 300-WORD PROPOSALS BY NOVEMBER 10th to: abstracts@atmos.ca. Clearly indicate the nature of your proposal (paper and sub-theme). All proposals will be blind peer reviewed. Notice of acceptance will be emailed by November 20th. Confirmation of attendance via registration will be required by December 20th, 2014.
