Undergraduate programs

Animal scientists develop innovative solutions for the challenges associated with a growing world population, shifting diet patterns, limited resources, and a changing climate.

  • We offer a four-year Bachelor of Science (Animal Systems), a pre-veterinary program, and offer courses that form part of the Diploma in Agriculture program.

We teach animal behaviour and welfare, genetics, nutrition, biochemistry, and physiology relating to the major domestic species, that is, beef and dairy cattle, swine, sheep and poultry. A variety of non-traditional species of livestock are covered too.

    Our programs:

Our courses are part of the School of Agriculture’s two-year diploma program where you can choose to focus on livestock management or general agriculture.

Graduate studies

The department offers courses leading to MSc and PhD degrees. Our department has a strong emphasis on sustainable agricultural systems and the use of mathematical models to describe these systems. Some faculty members also have an interest in human disease processes.

  • Courses of study and research may be undertaken in several disciplines related to animal science. These include nutrition, physiology, meat science, food safety and basic sciences, that is, immunology, microbiology, and molecular biology.

Our graduate students work alongside internationally recognized researchers at a robust number of state of the art facilities.

Research and facilities

Research is one of the most important aspects of the animal science department and is conducted at our specialized facilities, modern laboratories and collaborative research centres where our scientists and students work to address our prioritized areas of investigation.

  • The long-term vision for our research is focused on five main areas: nutrition and nutritional biochemistry; monogastric production systems; ruminant production systems; environmental impacts of livestock and modeling systems; and molecular biology and immunology of livestock and poultry.

Our network of facilities can be found both on campus and at various locations within the province of Manitoba. These resources support the departmental goal of building research capacity in existing and emerging areas of provincial, national and international importance to the animal industry.
