The Liturgy for the
Office of the Veil
Spanish, date unknown
Canadian Mennonite University/Mennonite Heritage Centre Archive, Loewen
2
This is a small, personal
liturgical manuscript, written on heavy paper. It would have been used
by a clergyman, such as an abbot or bishop. The book contains the liturgy
for the Office of the Veil, or the vows of a novice renouncing the world
and taking the veil. While the liturgy is in Latin, of course, the directions
or rubrics for the performance of the liturgy are all in Spanish. It is
clearly a well-used book; its first gatherings have been repaired, likely
for the user rather than by a conservator. We might imagine the bishop
traveling from one convent to another and performing this rite many times
over in the Spanish countryside around Barcelona.
