The Nuremberg Chronicle
[Chronicon Nurembergense]
Nuremberg, Anton Koberger, 1493
University of Manitoba, Dysart 21
This monumental history
was one of the turning points in the development of the book, demonstrating
that illustration could produce effects as striking as illumination. It
uses eighteen-hundred woodcut prints-some covering a full opening-to illustrate
the history of the world from creation to the fifteenth century. It was
written by Harmann Schedel and printed by Anton Koberger, one of the most
esteemed and successful printers of Europe. The woodcuts were designed
by Michael Wolgemut (master of Dürer) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, and
represent saints, martyrs, popes, emperors and kings, biblical events,
and cities.
