Fire Alarm Testing Schedule

The University of Manitoba Physical Plant is implementing legislated, monthly fire alarm testing at the Fort Garry Campus, effective January 6, 2014. This involves ringing all fire alarm bells/horns throughout the University of Manitoba within the first two weeks of each month. During the fire alarm test, fire bells/horns will be pulsed for 5 seconds repetitively. It is important to note that if a true fire alarm happens to coincide with fire alarm testing, fire bells/horns will stop pulsing and will ring continuously, thereby indicating that you must exit the building and follow established evacuation procedures.

Once again, pulsating fire alarm bells/horns within the first two weeks of each month indicate legislated fire alarm testing by Physical Plant and do not require evacuation.

  • Arthur V. Mauro Residence - Second Tuesday of the month (10:00 am to 2:00 pm)
  • Mary Speechly Hall - Second Tuesday of the month (10:00 am to 2:00 pm)
  • Pembina Hall - Second Tuesday of the month (6:00 am to 8:00 am)
  • Pembina Hall Residence - Second Monday of the month (10:00 am - 2:00 pm)
  • University College Residence - Second Thursday of the month (10:00 am - 2:00 pm)

Internet Outages - Student Residences

Every Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. all the Internet equipment in Mary Speechly Hall and University College Residence will be reset. If your connection stops working in that time slot, try it again after 9:00 a.m. This should minimize problems on the weekend and probably overall, plus it will give us a chance on a regular basis to see if we have any hardware failures or heating issues.

One of the concerns of living in residence is unsolicited or unauthorized entry into your room/suite. We are sensitive to and take proper precautions before entering into rooms, and in almost all cases, provide at least 24-hours notice of entry. Nevertheless, we would like to take an additional step in terms of communication with residents when it comes to room entry by having all U of M staff, e.g., Physical Plant, caretakers, IT staff, etc., leave a "Calling Card" when they have to enter a room without the student being present. Effective immediately, we will be implementing the use of these Calling Cards.
